Fix my table, please.

We bought a real, wood, adult table when we moved into the house.  It's pretty.  Problem?  Kitty claws.  She runs across it when she's twitchy or having crazy time.  We keep a table cloth on it, but she's still skidded a couple times and scratched it.  Are there any decent quick fixes, aside from having it sanded and refinished?

Re: Fix my table, please.

  • i can't help you on how to fix the table.     Just wanted to say my parents have table pads for their dinning room table.   It protects the table better than a tablecloth only.

  • I saw something online about using a walnut:
Scratches on a wooden table: Crack open a fresh walnut, rub the nut on the scratch and watch the nuts' oil fade the mark.

I haven't tested it, although I need to since my armoire has a couple scratches.

Does it secure to the table somehow?

    Adamar, that is very interesting.

My mom and grandparents have pads on theres as well, I am looking for one for our table. I think that might be the best thing to keep it from getting scratched further.

Mine too! That and something else but I cannot remember the name of it!

  • Depending on the colour of it, shoe polish can help cover a crack really well.  Or else, if you have a furniture maker nearby, they often have little containers of stain that you can use.  My mom has a beautiful custom made harvest table that her dog took a nail too.  She got a bit of matching stain.  It's not perfect, but it sure looks better.

    Damn animals and their claws.

Or else talk to a custom glass maker and ask them to cut out a piece of glass the same size.  Tempered glass.  It will rest on top of the table and the weight will keep it in place.

  • Yeah, I used to work in a custom furniture shop (so I should know the answer to this, I'm ashamed), and I've used the wood markers and crayons, but I don't like them.  They're hard to match well, IMO.

Unfortunately, there are a few deeper ones that I think nothing will fix aside from having it sanded and refinished.  I have some walnut oil I can try on the smaller ones, and I can get some Old English.  And pads.  And something with which to secure the pads.  Damn it, Box Kitty.  Hmpf.

  • How about rubbing an uncolored wax candle across the scratch to fill it, then use the colorings?
  • Oooh, BK, that might help with the deeper scratches for sure.  And it looks horrible I bet I could just scrape the wax out.  I like that idea.  Thanks.

He chews on shoes, furniture, remotes, wires.. EVERYTHING.

  • Have you talked to the vet about it?  I feel like chewing on EVERYTHING is super weird.  Maybe it's an anxiety thing.

My parents' cats used to do the chew everything thing. try a bad tasting spray maybe? i used bitter yuck from petco on my plants but i know there's homemade recipes, too.

OP, i don't know anything about wood but you could try these on kitty claws... I don't know if you can clip your kitty's claws or not (one of mine will tolerate me messing with his paws the other won't). These are like little caps you can put on your kitties claws so they can't destroy things. not a permanent solution but it'll keep your furniture until you can train him/her properly.
edit - i think the colors look silly lol

  • My parents have pads made for all of their big tables.  They are pretty heavy and have protected the table tops from cat claws (if only there was a good solution for the table legs).

We do clip her claws.  We tried the soft paws caps, but they freaked her out.  She has a neurological disorder and she's super anxious, so we try to stay away from things that increase her anxiety.  And we do have her trained to stay off the table normally now (finally), but we can't help what she's doing when she's running around being crazy.  She jumps on EVERYTHING then, including us.  (This post sounds bitchy and defensive, but I promise it's not.  Just more info since you probably don't know the whole backstory.)  But thank you for your suggestions!

Yeah, she's special alright ;)  But we love her.  And her liver flavored medication.  Blech.  Poor thing.
