Who comes first - man or woman?

When addressing INNER envelopes, is it inappropriate to use the woman's name first if a) she's a member of the family, or b) we have a closer relationship with her?

  • Ladies first. Always.

  • Ladies go first but the inner envelope is generally where names aren't present.

The outer reads 'Mr. and Mrs. John Smith' and the inner reads 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'.
  • There are tons of rules, and it depends on the situation.  One rule of thumb is never separate a man from his last name.

One reason a woman might be listed first is if she has a professional title and her husband doesn't, i.e. "Dr. Jane and Mr. John Doe".
