Just another vent about a Priest

I just hung up the phone with a priest at my local church. I asked about meeting him to discuss having my wedding ceremony at the church. He asked me when the wedding is and I said February 2012- I know it is a year and a half away but reception sites book quickly in the area regardless of season. He spent the whole conversation telling me how February is the worst month to get married and in his entire career, he only performed one or two ceremonies in the month of February.

I understand that February can have some crazy snow storms, but the date is chosen and I am happy with the date. I work and go to school and won't graduate until end of Dec/ beginning of January. March is lent and then April can have really hot days and I hate the heat. I told the Priest that I would rather chance having a snow storm than getting married in hot weather which I hate- and I also do not want to push the date back another half year. He then tried to convince me to have the wedding in April. I felt like no matter what I said he wasn't listening!

Thanks for letting me vent. I understand where the priest is coming from but it's just difficult when you're speaking to someone and you feel ignored during the whole conversation.

  • Tell him God told you to have the wedding in February. A good priest won't argue with that.

  • What day in February?

I ask because the Superbowl XLVI is on February 5, 2012, so your priest may want to save the date.

  • we were married Feb 21 (in new england) and we had a gorgeous sunny day, about 34 or 35 degrees.  amazingly, there was no snow on the ground.

we chose Feb for very similar reasons as you - we picked the last saturday before Ash Wednesday.  we didnt want to wait until April becuase around here, Jan/Feb/Mar is conisdered "off season" for weddings and i was able to get us deals on key pieces like photography ( for example, i had a photog who did our wedding for $500, who normally charges $2500+).  we did not want a summer wedding becuase of the heat, and everyone gets married in the fall now.

H's grandmother gave us sh** too, for picking Feb.

That's too funny. I picked February 19th and actually kept in mind the superbowl and pro-bowl when picking the date.

Jasmineh- I may just use that line next time.

Calypso- thanks for sharing your story. It's nice to hear that i'm not one of the "only brides in 35 years who chose to have a February wedding". I hope my wedding turns out as beautiful as yours sounds.

  • I have an Aunt who got married in February in Western New York (huge history of blizzards and snow storms).  The wedding was 10 years ago, and we all had to drive an hour and a half to the wedding, so peopple were nervous for months about it.  Then the weekend came and it was unseasonably warm, with temps being in the 70's that day.  Nobody can ever predict the weather!

Tell them you don't want to budge on your date, and if you have to then look for another church, or just threaten hiim with that.  Its your choice when you want to get married.

P.S. Mine is on February 5, 2011 -- the day BEFORE the Superbowl. ;)

eta - I'm also in Arizona, where the average high in February is 71 degrees, so take this post with a grain of salt (and twist of lime, if you like).

That sounds like a great date to get married. It will be one fun weekend for everyone. I'm assuming you never have to worry about bad weather in Tuscon.

  • Celles, I posted my response before your ETA, just in case I seem oblivious.

Dnbeach, you're right no one can ever predict the weather. I'm going to be praying a lot that a storm doesn't hit- although it would be nice to have a priest on my side!
The reception site we chose is a hotel and the owner told us that if a storm is expected, he will have his staff stay the night before to prepare for the wedding. I'm not as worried about the reception hall closing as I am about the guests actuallymaking it there. Either way, the date is set and I can only hope for the best Smile

  • holy crap!! he sounds like the priest in BK that married us. By the time the wedding rolled around, we hated him!!!!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic There's no room for you mommy! Shorry!
  • Yeah he is in Brooklyn. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the same priest.

  • Priests are difficult.  Just smile and deal with him because of the stories I've heard about issues with priests, that's a mild one.  In the end, you'll be married.  I know it sucks though to have to put up with all the crap.
