Martini Bar

LOS ANGELESTotal posts: 25Hello everyone,
Sorry this isn't etiquette related but I thought this board got more traffic and no one would mind discussing martinis! Just wanted your input on your favorite flavors of martini. I get to have four options at our martini bar. The caterer gave me some ideas below but I don't have to go with them. I am definitely keeping the "filthy martini" and "Lychee" but I think pom martinis and  cosmos are out of style and I hate cranberry juice. I was thinking of doing a Godiva white chocolate raspberry martini and I need one more. Any ideas?  I am getting married in the fall by the way.

Re: Martini Bar

  • Hello formatting issues.

  • GIrls LOVE cosmos, but if you don't like, you don't like.  I'd be drinking the lychee!  I'd also suggest an espresso martini option - while not my fave they are definitely popular.
  • Sorry about the formatting... I don't know what happened.
I wanted to steer clear of chocolate  and espresso since I am serving mini choc. milkshakes at my slider station and there will be an espresso/ capuchino bar later that night.

I think axeing the cosmo would be a real mistake.  They never go out of style.  It might be overkilled right now (Thanks, Carrie Bradshaw) but that doesn't change the fact that it IS a good drink and women love them.   Plus, when it comes to determining the bar menu, your personal preferences does not matter as much as what the crowd you are serving as a whole will like best. • Mmmm white choc rasp. sounds amazing!
I don't like cosmos but I always prefer fruity or chocolaty drinks. I have no idea what Lychee is?
  • Thanks for quoting me- my formatting was wacky and I posted 3x (once on food and cakes and once on here) because I didn't think it was going through. I'm a big ol mess today haha. Sorry about that!

I already posed the question to my girlfriends about the cosmo and the consensus was that it is overdone. Also, obviously martini bars are not a necessity at a wedding- just a nice addition to the regular bar so I think I don't have to provide a cosmo because people will be expecting it or anything.
  • What about a pumpkin pie martini?
  • Lychee is an Asian fruit- a nut technically. It is delicious- kind of tastes like a mini pear to me. You should try it!
  • Pumpkin Pie martinis exist? That sounds interesting!
  • Yes! And they are delicious! I've also seen eggnog ones. Ooh maybe a pecan pie one? I think that can be done...
  • I just answered this on Food and Cakes, so I'll repost:

    The filthy one looks great!

I think the filthy, lychee and godiva martinis are great because they are all different. One is more of a regular martini, one is fruity, one is sweet. I'd probably add one more fruity one in there. The pomegranate one sounds good to me, actually. Or else a caramel apple martini? Lemon drops are tasty, but I think the light, fruity flavor is too similar to lychee.

What's funny is that I only go over to that board about once a week, and this is one of the only posts I answered - 30 minutes ago.

Oh, yeah, maybe you should do a seasonal one or something that goes with your wedding colors as a "signature drink."

And since it says you live in Los Angeles, I have to ask, have you ever been to Lola's on Fairfax? They invented the appletini. They literally have almost 50 kinds of martinis and they serve them in HUGE glasses. You should check it out. Or at least check out their menu:

They do a garlic mashed potato martini. Maybe do a spicy martini? Something with jalepeno?

  • I am not a big cosmo fan, personally, but many people like them and cranberry is not cloyingly sweet.  Dirty martinis are a bit much for a lot of people and the other fruit drinks are super sweet.  You should keep the cran option so you have something that's not a super strong tasting martini but not overly sweet.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

Does Lola's still have $5 happy hour?  That's a great way to sample their martinis.  Didn't they invent the sour apple martini?

    Yes and yes.

The $5 is only on one or two martini-of-the-month specials and then one or two well drinks, though, I think. And some of their appetizers are half off. Man, I haven't been there in ages. And I actually live quite close (like maybe a mile away).

  • That all sounds fantastic!

May I offer a suggestion?  Get 6 oz. martini glasses rather than the standard 8 - 9 oz ones.  Really good martinis are always a hit but they can be consumed faster than the drinker thinks which often can turn into a disaster.  They weren't that expensive, less than $100.

Just passing on a suggestion from our site coordinator.  She'd seen too many guests totally blown away by martini bars.
  • I will have to check Lola's out; thanks for the suggestion! I am actually not getting my own glasses, I assume the caterer will take care of that. Also, I know my friends will be getting pretty trashed anyway so the size of the glass won't matter lol. We are providing shuttle service for everyone anyway.

If people want cranberry juice they can definitely get a cran vodka or whatever at the regular bars. I want to pick flavors that both my fiance and I like. Surprisingly, most people I've divulged my menu to were most excited about the filthy. It grosses me out because I hate olives and blue cheese but my fiance likes it so we decided to go with it.

I want to incorporate rock candy stirrers into one of the martinis so perhaps another fruit flavor- although the pecan pie one sounds delicious. I just worry that I am already having the white choc raspberry and that's heavy. I don't really want to have two heavy drinks AND milkshakes.
  • The best martini I have ever had was a gingerbread martini. Delicious. I think if you have a full bar in addition to the martini station, a cosmo won't missed with all the other options available.

We are doing a basic dry martini, a tomato-politan martini, a drunken applessed martini, and a Mango martini.

  • What about a Flirtini? or a pineapple upside down cake martini? (vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, grenadine float on bottom with a cherry garnish)

  • Sorry to put in as I'm usually a lurker.

However, to me a Italian Wedding Cake martini seems like an obvious choice such an occassion.  I've had them many times at Carrabbas and they are divine.

I'm also a big fan of the Lemon Drop martini with he sugar rimmed glasses. Yum.
