Is anyone still on?

I'm working on wedding pictures and nobody is on FB and DH has been asleep for a very long time.

  • I'm here. I'm cooking breakfast :-)

  • I'm always wondering---where are you?
  • Right now we are in Antibes France. We'll be here until the end of May and then settle permanently in Queensland Australia.

I was originally from the DC area.

  • What has made you become a world traveler?
  • Right now H is working on one of the Mega Yachts over here. So I came to join him until his contract ends. H is also Australian and wanted to move back home. So...we got married in Perth and went through the whole Spousal Visa process.

I kind of like the traveling about business. I'm just afraid H is going to be terribly bored after 6 months of living on land. He's been traveling the world with the yacht for four years.

  • That seems pretty exciting.

I think I remember you from when I was a regular before my recent return---you were in an LDR, right?
  • The other Queenslander is here, too. ;P

    How are you both doing?

aMrs, you are so very lucky to be in the cold right now. I thought I was going to spew this afternoon it was so humid and disgusting (Nick was sick so we left early to come home- missed work's aircon!). On the upside, Nick finally arranged for aircon and extraction fan installation. Happy days in a cooler house.

  • I'm doing well. I'm enjoying some quality time with Photoshop. :)

Sun...yesterday I looked at your wedding pictures, and wow. Absolutely wow. Not only does your wedding seem to have been truly fantastic, but your photographer was outstanding.

A--I was actually about to tell you before Sun popped in that you're lucky! You'll get to be with Sun in Australian magnificence!
  • (I checked Cairns temps but they weren't as hot as Brisbane's. The South side of Australia has had crazy heatwaves of late. Perth was something like 46 the other day!)
  • Jess, yep, we were in a VERY LDR. Whic is why I'm here. We kind of wanted to live together after we got married.

TheSun, yes, I love my cold. Although if I hear H whine about 10 ( about 41 F) degrees again. I am looking for a temperate climate for us to move to. He hates cold and I hate heat. This is not boding well at all.

and YEA for A/C! How hot is it there? I saw Perth was expected to be over 100 for several days this week.

  • Thanks Jess. Our photog was really amazing. Jonas (photog) is actually in our circle of friends and only started shooting weddings a year ago. As soon as we saw pictures from the first wedding he shot (a friend of ours) we knew we had to have him for ours! He's very talented. I love his non-wedding work, too.

and yes, Australian magnificence so long as you have airconditioning! :P Or at least where I am, anyway.

  • Thaaaaaaaat's right. Wow, my memory just came flooding back, lol. I knew that I remembered you, but the details weren't coming. It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now...
  • pfffft Jess, we've already had a gtg!

  • Well, today was 34C/94F... but, if you factor in the humidity it supposedly feels another four degrees c hotter, so more like 100F.

All I know is that the windows were open and the heat rushing in from outside was not good at all. That, and I thought I was going to throw up at one point because I was so hot. It's really very disgusting and humid.

I am thinking a move to Tasmania wouldn't be such a bad thing. I'd totally brave the inbreds for the cool weather! ;P

  • I'm jealous!

Oh, Sun. I know all about the importance of air conditioning. I live in Southeast Texas, land of the heat and home of the humidity.

  • I told H I wanted to move to Tas! We're already married, so who cares if they are inbred.

The housing is 1/2 the cost, the sailing is better, the temps are better...

H had some issue with it being too close to the South Pole and no employment. Bah.

  • So, MrsA and Sun, what do you do? For a living? As a hobby? Anything.

This posting while doing the pictures is motivating them to finish them faster!
  • Jess, where in TX? I thought it was dry there.

Sun, ,SIL keeps saying, oh but it cools down. Yeah I don't think going from 104 to 90 is "cooling off" To me tht is going from " I am about to die" to "touch me and you'll get smacked" not much of a difference.

  • I'm not sure how true the no employment thing is these days. I know there's less employment, but I do think that Tas is picking up.

Nick and I were looking at houses online for down there- so cheap and such a beautiful place, could make for good investment purchases. And yes, yay for cooler weather. Some friends of ours have just moved there and have picked up work very quickly (she's an academic and he was just looking for whatever he could find- I think he's doing some sort of organisation/admin work for a labouring company or something). They got their jobs within a couple of weeks of moving.

  • Houston. Houston and humidity are BFFs for life.
  • So, there are inbreds in Tasmania? Or is that just what people say, just like people say that about people from Alabama and from Arkansas in the US?
  • It doesn't really cool down. I don't think anyone can claim that QLD (or any aspect of mainland Australia, save perhaps VIC) really gets cold.

And Jess, what are you doing to your pictures? Editing or something?

I'm a researcher. I do child protection research with a health focus for a children's hospital child protection unit. I'm currently doing my PhD, focused on abusive head trauma (aka shaken baby syndrome). And in my play time? Of late, H and I drink beer, I make copious amounts of life plans involving finishing the PhD, purchasing investment properties, doing renovations to our house, having babies, moving to Germany and planning our next holiday/s.

I surely hope it's just what people say. It's just that it's an island state so thus there's always been running jokes about inbreds and the 'special' tasmanian people. I would hope that there aren't too many IRL inbreds there, though, haha.

I'm not working right now, but when I was employed, I was an Account Manager for a Direct Mail Marketing agency. For 19 years prior to that, I did the direct mail for Non-Profits that chose to not use an agency.

Cocktail Party version? I send out Junk Mail for Non-Profits.

As for hobbies, I sail, cook, do counted cross-stich, read, and believe it of not, I Tat (a form of lace making).

    And you?

  • Yes, I'm editing. I got the disc of photos in today, so I'm having a field day. I'm pretty sure someone could pay me to photoshop and I'd be just fine.

The fact that you're working in child protection makes me like you even more. I was on a jury for a horrific child abuse case, where head-trauma was ultimately what caused her death and that case deeply affected me.

Are you and your husband Aussie natives?

I'm afraid there's no cocktail party version for what I do! I really have to be careful where I talk about my job, actually; the other day my hairdresser's assistant asked me and I told her, only to have her clam up, and then ask me what I think about foster children and if I think it's sad kids get removed from their homes... Essentially I'd hit a nerve by mentioning my association with child protection as her nephews were just placed in care, as she later told me... Similarly, sometimes people ask me to tell them more about my PhD, and when I do, they get visibly upset... so moral of the story: do not start talking child protection with acquaintances- even if they ask!

  • I'm currently a substitute teacher, and work has been pretty slow due to teachers being back from the holidays. (Thus my incessant posting.) I graduated with a B.F.A in Theatre Design and I have always wanted to teach. It was faster to get out of formal education if I did the alternative certification program to teach, so I'm doing that online.

I'm hoping to find a job teaching English for next school year. I have found how much I love the language and how desperately students need good English teachers through subbing.

In my free time, I spend far too much time on TK, doing photography recreationally, photoshopping any photos that I'm inspired to edit, I'm learning to knit, cook and bake as well.

I also love to spend time with my nephew. That may sound lame, but he's by far one of my favorite people to spend time with, and he's only three.

Posted by JessAndTrav[/QUOTE]

We are, although H's father is German with all of his side of the family still living there (and he has also moved back to Germany) and his mother's parents were German. We visited his family just outside of Munich a couple of years ago- was fantastic. We're thinking we'll go back and live there for awhile in the next couple of years.

and thanks. That sort of case is what I'd be looking at with my PhD. It's sometimes traumatic to just read the literature- there's pictures of autopsies and all sorts of things in there that are really rather confronting- but because I don't see the children I'm researching in the flesh (just their records), it's a little easier for me not to identify with them... which is essential if you want to stay afloat when working in an area like that.

  • Oh I hear that. The only family member I can be around longer than two days is my two year old niece!

Sun, that is sad that you have to be so careful. It's even more sad because it's so prevalent that you may run into people in the "system".

Since I have you two here... What is the code to get my bio back in my sig?

And Jess, since you love Photoshop so much I may have to send you a picture. It is one of my favorites, save for an errant palm tree frond behind us.
