NWR: Apartment Pet related (kinda long)

I know this doesn't compare to some of the drama floating around here today and I feel like this fits in perfectly with the etiquette board. FI and I live in an apartment complex that allows pets (we have a cat), it is part of a larger complex but our particular building only has 12 units.

Well you know, responsible pet ownership and everything (and per the terms of the lease) owners are supposed to pick up after their animals.  Someone hadn't been doing that (though we have suspected who). FI just saw the people we suspected pick it up and leave it on the front steps, in a little baggy right by the front door.

We have called mangement twice now (about a month apart for the dog poop in the grass), and prior to that they had left a notice on everyone's door that if things didn't get picked up they would start charging to get it cleaned up.  FI left a message before seeing them do this about it and that we suspected them, but now, he has actually seen them in the act.

I really wish we could set the stupid bags of dog ish in front of their door, but that would be childish. And I'm too stubborn to throw their ish away, because it is not my dog. So WWYD?

  • I would poop on their doormat.

But seriously. Being a vigilante in this situation isn't best. Keep complaining to the apartment managers, and if nothing more gets done, step up. Is there a larger complex management company that oversees your complex? Go to them. If not.. well, I'm not quite sure what else you can do, maybe someone else has some ideas.. My brain is fried after the KJ fight. :)

  • Honestly? I would anonymously leave it at their front door with a note: "oh, sillies! You left this behind! No problem, that's what neighbors are for - helping neighbors to remember things!"

Haha! I know that. And unforuntately there is not, the complex pretty big (and they also have other properties around town and stuff).  The most that may happen is that it will "accidentally" fall onto the ground next to the steps.  Because uh, they are the basement/ground floor apartment and their living room windows open right up to that and summer is coming. (I won't do that, but gosh I wish I could.)

I'm kind of hoping now that we have actually seen it, they will charge them more or something, since that is what they had said in their letter.

  • So they are picking up the crap, but not throwing it away?

Honestly, I would suggest poop trash cans for the complex.   My parent's condo had the same problem, it was mostly resolved when they put out cans (with bags also) so people didn't have to bring it back inside their condo.

Our apartment has cans for dog waste around.  I find when there is a easily accessible place to dispose of the waste they are more likely to clean up after their pet.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Our building has the same issue - well, technically, our building and two others. Our block has three complexes on it, and people are TERRIBLE about picking up their dogs' poop. One of the building even installed poop bins with baggies attached, but people still leave it ALL over the sidewalk. Seriously. Poop ever four feet. We just got a dog three weeks ago and pick up after it religiously and I never SEE anyone poop and run, but I'm dying to know who is lazy enough to just leave their poop there so I can throw it at them.
  • My apartment complex has been having a huge problem with people not picking up their dog crap. And we have the biggest dog so people always think it's us. Shrug. Anyway, they encourage us to take pictures of people who are leaving their crap everywhere and they give them a warning or two and then call the cops to give them a ticket. Not picking up dog crap is a city ordinance and you get a $75 dollar ticket. If it's the same thing where you live and your apartment isn't doing anything about it, I would see if the cops will.

</div><div>THIS :)  We had the same problem and that's what I did.  I would (with gloves on) pick their dogs poop up and then put it on their door step.  Several times the punk kid who lived there would step in it leaving... He was some 19 year old kid who threw large parties and his idea of walking his large dog was letting it out twice a day.  I generally try and stay out of peoples business but that poor dog never got exercise and I felt terrible for it.  On top of that he didn't even pick up after it.</div><div>

  • It astounds me sometimes how lazy and inconsiderate some people are.  But then again, I was spoiled and when I had my dog I lived in the country and had a designated area where she could run around a bit and do her business, and then we could clean it up later.  Now I just have litter-trained rabbits . . . but when I have a dog again, it's not that hard to clean up after it!
I hope this gets resolved for you, and that you don't have to pay for these people's dog poop!

<div>This is what I would do.  We have noticed some stray poop around our apartment complex, especially in the place where we take our dog out to pee at night (so we definitely do not want poop there to step on in the dark), and we're pushing our management company to put in more trash stations with poop bags.  </div>
