Recommend your camera, please

I promised Mr. P I'd do some research on a new camera. Since technical research makes me feel even sleepier than normal, I'm just going to ask y'all for recommendations. I currently have a CoolPix camera that takes pretty good outdoor shots, but it sucks for indoor pictures. The coloring always comes out weird, everything gets blurry, blah. I don't need a big professional camera, just a small, easy to travel with one that takes clear pictures indoors and out. What say you?

Re: Recommend your camera, please

  • Depends on your budget. I would looooove the Canon S95, it's basically a pro camera in an itty bitty body, but it's pricy. Canon P&S cameras are all generally very good, though.
  • I've been buying Canon PowerShot's for as long as I've had a digital camera. I've had three now (I lost one, so don't blame Canon! and the other was a simple upgrade) and been very happy with them all. I'm not sure what model number they're selling now, but definitely check out the brand.

CNet.com has good, extensive camera reviews as well.

  • I have the newest Coolpix and I <3 even more than the one I replaced (replaced because I'd had it all through college and it been dropped a few times). I also have a Nikon D40. It's not super professional, but it's much, much better than a point and shoot.

  • I used to have a Lumix FZ7 (more than point&shoot, less than SLR) which i loved. I recently replaced it with a D-SLR (nikon) and a Nikon CoolPix S6000 - it takes great pix both inside and outside. they recently updated it to s6001 i think. The canon point&shoot cameras are really nice too.
  • I love that by saying you'll research, you really mean that you'll ask the TK ladies for recs.

I have a Sony, and I don't love it.  It can take some nice pictures, but it can be tempermental.  I would go the Canon or Nikon route.  I think they have the best cameras.

I loved my Sony Cyber-shot.  I got a CoolPIx for my birthday, and I like my Sony better except that pixel wise it's ancient now.

  • H has this and loves it:

You've seen the photos he takes, so that should be pretty helpful for you too.  :)  The only thing that's problematic is, that it's a wide-angle lens, which can make things close look wide.
  • We're definitely a Canon family.  My first digital was a Canon and I loved it.  I got an upgrade for Christmas one year that was a Nikon CoolPix and it was a piece of crap...so when I broke it (not on purpose, lol) I went back to Canon.  I'm now on my 3rd Canon (upgrages) and it's a Powershot SD 1200is.  It's a great camera and it was only like $110 I think.

FI also has all Canon stuff for his DSLRs.  He just bought a Canon 7D and I think his other body is a Rebel xsi.  FI also really preferred that our wedding photographer use Canon cameras because he likes them better.  LOL.

You're most likely not ever gonna get great indoor pics with a point and shoot (well at least none that I've ever seen).  I just got a new DSLR (Nikon d3100), and we have a Nikon D90 at work.  They take much better indoor pictures, even without flash.  But you said you want a small camera, so I guess my recommendation is pointless, lol.

It's not a problem if you're far enough away (like 2ft).  They might have fixed it in the newer models also.  It takes fantastic lowlight pics.  H got it because of taking photos in churches actually.
  • Hi Mandy! POUTINE! I want poutine. Did I tell you what a dreadful disappointment the local poutine placed turned out to be? I was so sad.

What I'm gathering from these recs is that maybe I should consider a Canon. This is good info! Thanks all!
  • I have a Canon SD1200 IS, and love it. It is very slim and pocket-size, so no problems taking it places by slipping it in a pocket or in my purse. Takes really nice photos and has lots of manipulation options as well.

Yep, wide-angle lenses are awesome for low light.  I can't wait to get one for my new camera!  My wedding photographer shoots pretty much entirely without flash b/c of her wide angle lens.

  • I have a Kodak Easyshare and every time i get a new camera, that is the kind that I get. They are awesome. I carry mine in my purse everywhere I go, because that's just how I roll! They are light and thin. They take great pictures indoors and out. Most of them even have panoramic picture feature that works really well.
  • We just bought some D-SLR camera (or whatever it's called)...Panasonic GF2 i think...my FI LOVES it.  We were out of town this weekend and I joked that he brought his new girlfriend.  It's not that big and it takes pretty good pictures.  Lots of settings though and I dunno really how to use them all..he is learning though.

  • I've got a canon rebel, and a canon 20d. Both are fantastic. For a non pro, you can put it on automatic settings and use the camera's built in flash. But as your skills improve you can use manual settings and add a better flash, buy cool lenses etc. My Ex was a pro photographer and he had better cameras, but he loved shooting with my 20d because it still did everything he needed, but without being as heavy as some of his.

I used to be a Sony girl but I always loved Canon.. I recently purchased this one:

A bit on the pricey side but I love taking photos (I like to say I "dabble" in photography :P) and wanted a point-and-shoot that was almost professional. I love this camera and it takes really great video, as well.

Etid: I forgot to mentiont he amazing 14x optical zoom!
  • I vote Canon. I have a Canon SD700 IS which is now four years old, and I have no reason to replace it. It's small, goes for a long time on a battery charge, takes good pictures, and has optical image stabilization for my shaky hands.

Canon just came out with the PowerShot ELPH 100 HS, which is supposed to be better in low-light conditions. It's small and has optical image stabilization. It's $200.
