Stupid Question about marriage licenses

Do you get the license for the place that you LIVE or the place that you're getting married?  We're getting married in a different county than where we live and I'm confused.

Re: Stupid Question about marriage licenses

  • Every state is different.

For CT, I know you need to get it from the town you are getting married in.

I would google, marriage license, town/state you are getting mairried in to learn more. Or just call the city/town hall
  • every state is different, as PP said.

here in MA, you can go to any town or city clerk to get the license, regardless of where you live or where the ceremony is.  you can then use the license in any city or town.

contact your county or municipal clerk's office.
  • In IL, you get your license in the county of the place where you are getting married; where you live is irrelevant.

  • In NJ, you have to get the license in the town where you or FI live, but then it gets filed by your officiant in the town you get married in.

And since you are getting married in another county, the US does not recognize all foreign wedding licenses.  You may need to do some leg work to figure out how to get your license done correctly, so it will be valid in the US.

    Not country.

In NC, we had to get it in the county we were getting married in.
  • In MD you have to get the marriage license in whatever town/county you are getting married in.  So for H and I we got our marriage license from Baltimore City even though we live in Harford County.

But like all PP have said, all states are different.  Just do a quick google search in your area to see what is required.

  • I would call the county you are getting married in & ask. I live in Ohio and any county license is good for any county in Ohio. While calling, also ask if there are any special documents you need to bring to show proof of residence. Also if either of you have been married before they may require you to provide a certified copy of the divorce papers or death notice if you are a widow.
  • Call the county clerk's office for both counties. I remember someone posting once about getting married in a different county that was supposed to file the paperwork and refused, saying the county she lived in was supposed to, but that county said she had to have it filed in the other one, and it was a huge mess.

  • In Oregon it doesn't matter.  A license from any county is good in any other county.

</div><div>This is only true though if you actually live in Ohio.  FI is from Ohio, but we now live in CA.  We are getting married in Ohio and our license is ONLY good in the county where we got it.</div><div>
</div><div>Not saying your Ohio info is wrong, just that it is for people who live there.</div>
