Oral surgery two weeks from wedding?

I got some crappy news today... my dentist confirmed that one of my wisdom teeth hurting/swollen was the result of a bad infection.  As of this morning I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to eat.  He said all my teeth needed to come out asap, and asap is Monday.
My wedding is on June 30th- two weeks.
I'm pretty upset... because I have a lot of last minute stuff to do and I'm afraid that I'll miss something.
I still need to call a few people about RSVPs, I need to confirm appointments for everybody, get decorations finalized, get schedules double checked with everybody, etc. I don't want to push this responsibility off on anybody else, but what if I can't talk because I have gauze shoved in my mouth?
Is it totally rude to take help if people offer it?

And... how long did it take you to get over having your wisdom teeth removed, if you have had them done?

Re: Oral surgery two weeks from wedding?

  • Ugh for me it was awful, I had them done around Christmas. It only took a day or so to get to feeling better but I couldn't eat comfortably for about a week or so, that was the hard part.

Is your FI incapable of helping?

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at once, and I was ridiculously swollen for about a week (like, so swollen the skin on my face hurt from being stretched so tight).  After the swelling went down, I looked fine, but it was probably another week or so before I was eating fully normally.

Surely your FI can help you with some of this stuff, yes?

Having mine removed was a bittch (other people I know had far easier experiences), but after 2 weeks I was pretty much fine -- crusty bread like on sandwiches or bruschetta would still have been a no go though.

    Hey, I'll take that!
I pretty much figured it would be broth and mushy things only for like a week and a half.

Edit: whoops, people responded really quickly.

My FI can definitely help, but he has two classes and work, so he's way busier than I am.  Hopefully he can handle a lot of it though.
  • Huh. My brother had his out and ate a cheeseburger that day. Eesh. No sh!t. When I had mine out, I had spaghetti and meatballs, felt fine, and went to a football game that night. Only one person said anything to me about swelling --- the boy I had a crush on at the time. Of COURSE. But both brother and I iced our faces religiously all day.

Bottom line, you can't predict these sorts of things.

  • Considering the time frame, I would have pushed to get in today! I took a long time to heal after mine, but I take a while to heal from a bruise. How long does it usually take you to heal from other even smaller injuries or such things? Also if anyone offers help, it is totally OK to take them up on it, but you should probably hae your FI make the RSVP follow up calls if you really can't.
  • I tried to get in today! Both offices close at two on Friday.  I was incredibly lucky that I got in on Monday... I think he wasn't even going to do it until they told him that our wedding was in two weeks.
  • As far as swelling and bruising.. I usually recover pretty quickly and I'm hoping that I will from this too.
  • I had all of mine out with no problem. I was fine and back to normal within a day or two. Everyone is different--you really can't predict it.
  • Meh, it wasn't that bad. About a week, really.
  • Eek, good luck.  I had all 4 of mine out and had a bad reaction to the meds, so my experience was a little different.  The swelling in my mouth was down in a few days, but I took the whole week to just relax and recoop.  Get lots done this weekend and a great to-do list for your FI.  You should be fine!

  • I got all of mine out in high school over my spring break. By the time I went back to school 5 or 6 days later, I was totally fine. I was kind of out of it for the first day or two but I don't remember any real pain or discomfort. I think the stitches just bugged me being in there until they dissolved.

  • Im sure people would love to help you! I know if I was in the wedding or a close friend to someone who needed it I would be willing to help! But if you need to get your teeth out I would do it soon, recovering for me from having my wisdom teeth pulled took about 3 days to feel normal again, then for eathing normal food it took about a week. Of course everyone is different but listen to what they say with eating rules because you dont want to end up with dry sockets. But for being able to still get things done I would have help of friends and rest for a few days before finishing up the work!
  • When I got mine out, I recovered in about a week.  The only good thing about getting my wisdom teeth out was the 5lbs I lost from eating mostly liquids for a while week!
  • I had my surgery, took a nap and then that night I was hanging out with friends and I was fine. I got some mild bruising on my cheeks but that went away a day or two later.

So long as you're careful to avoid dry socket it shouldn't be too bad, though it's different for everybody.

If you're having them out 2 weeks ahead of time, you will most likely by ok. Swelling usually peaks about day 3 after surgery. You can always try ice the same day of surgery to help reduce swelling. Good luck! I'm sure it will all turn out fine!
  • I didn't have much bruising, which is surprising because I always have random bruises that appear, but I had two out and it took me about 3 days to feel normal, probably about a week to eat normal food. I will say to make sure that whomever is with you fills your pain med prescription as soon as they can. We found out that day that I metabolize opiates very quickly, and I was in writhing pain for about 20 minutes because I came out of anesthesia early and didn't take the vicodin immediately. Horrific.

For wisdom teeth- I had all four impacted and taken out at once. I got horribley sick from the anatheisa, but was better in about a week. Same with my sister. My brothers both had them out and were completely recovered and unswollen in about 3 days.

ETA- I barely was swollen at all.  None of my sibblings were that bad either, like barely noticeable.

  • I had all four out at once and they had roots (hadn't had dental insurance in a few years so had put it off!).  I was fine after about 3 days.  Actually met the future in laws the day after and spent the weekend with them; my now FMIL has since told me that she thought I was so quiet at first, but it was actually because I of my teeth being removed!  On the drive back, we stopped and had lobster rolls, no problem (about 3 days after).  But I was really good with the ice packs, heating pad, and salt water rinses!  I think it helped that I was a little older (23) when I got them out and not 16.  All the horror stories seem to come from 16 year olds and their dry sockets...

  • I was fine after a day or two. In pain for one day and swollen for two. You should be fine in two weeks! Try not to stress!

  • I think everyone is different so take this with a grain of salt but when mine came out not only was I swollen for a week or so but I lost all sense of taste in my right side (surgeon severed a nerve)...I'm still pissed about it to this day but they have you sign a release saying things like that can happen.

The exact same thing happened to me 3 weeks before my wedding. I think I had surgery on July 20th, we left to travel for our wedding on August 7th, and the wedding itself was August 14th.

I couldn't eat solid foods for about 5 days, but then I was fine.  I had the dissolvable stitches and a little strip with numbing solution placed inside the cavity, which was removed about a week after the surgery.  But I was absolutely fine by the time we left for the wedding.

The only problem I had was that since I couldn't eat solid foods for awhile, I unexpectedly lost extra weight and had to have my dress taken in quite a bit.  So make sure you're getting enough calories post surgery.

    Good luck!

  • I had 3 of mine removed at once.  I think I have a high pain tolerance.  It wasn't bad.  I was sick that day but after that fine.  I had dry sockets so that part sucked but with pain killer was tolerable.  I think I had them out on thurs and went back to work on Monday.  I didn't have bruising but I think I used ice to prevent swelling and bruising

Just make sure you follow what they tell you for follow up care.  It will make recovery smoother.

I think two weeks should be fine.

  • I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out at once. My dentist told me that if they put you under you generally have more bruising and swelling. As a result, he just numbs the area. I was actually fine once the numbing medicine wore off. I was eating french fries that night. I had bought a ton of yogurt and applesauce before hand because I expected the worst, but it really wasn't that bad.

Follow the directions they give you regarding ice and dry socket and you will be fine!
    Good luck!

  • Oh and I was very very swollen.  The swelling did go down in about 5 days, but it sounds like it varies significantly from person to person.
  • I had oral surgery in January. I was back at work the next day and on prescription pain killers just at night for a week. I also was on a mushy diet for a week.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I was still in college. I think I was on the prescription pain killers all day for 3 days or so. I can't remember the food details.

So far as my friends and family tell me, they couldn't tell I had surgery, from the outside, as soon as the day after the surgery.

It is NOT rude to accept help if people offer.
  • I had mine out on a thursday, in addiition to 3 regular teeth, friday was a blur, saturday and sunday i could do small things(like shower, or pay attention to a movie) i was supposed to go back to work on monday but i ended up takin monday too and by tuesday i was good at work. still couldn't eat anything i wanted obv. Brusing didnt get bad until monday, and was bad for at least a week, Clinique makes an AMAZING product that covers brusies, it comes in a stick and its yellow, couldn't tell you what it is called but its amazin!!

I had all four of mine at once - one was impacted.  I went under completely even though I was supposed to be in the "twilight zone."  I had no swelling at all - they gave me some sort of medication for that (a steroid of some sort).  The pain meds knocked me out for a day but once we realized it was the pain meds that they had prescribed that kept knocking me out I stopped taking them, starting taking relatively heavy doses of advil for a few days and was fine (no pain, swelling, etc) within 3 days.  I had mine out the weekend before thanksgiving and was totally fine for thanksgiving dinner.
