Dog People

So I had a really bad evening. My little Holmie (our rescue minpin) had a seizure a few hours ago. We rushed him to the vet, and even though he seems ok right now (he is completely his normal self) I am still a mess :( The vet told us that sometimes seizures are just normal in some dogs, and as long as they are not happening every few hours then he will be ok. However, we did a blood work up and tomorrow we will find out if it is cancer or a thyroid problem. The first just really sucks but the second is treatable.

Does any one have experience with this? I just am so crazy worried right now googling is not cutting it. Even just a fun picture will make me feel better :)

Re: Dog People

  • My brother's dog had a seizure once, it lasted a couple of minutes. There was never anything found and she never had another one in her 15 years of life. I think sometimes they just happen.

  • I am coming to this late, but i also have experience with this. Out of no where, my 4 month old golden had a seizure, petit mal. He climbed into my arms and just went limp, then peed himself. When it was over he was totally fine, just tired. I rushed him right to the vet and they took a bunch of tests. Everything came back normal. Then they had us bring him in on an empty stomach and they took some blood. Then they fed him and took more blood a few hours later (it was to check some kind of levels). Also came back normal. So the dr told us to play process of elimination. I have to say, in those few weeks i read EVERYTHING about canine seizures. I asked a million questions including if it had to do with the immunization shots he had just received (yup, its rare, but it can be a cause). A few weeks later, he had another one, this one he felt coming and ran right to me. I was very happy he had that second one because it showed a link: both times he was eating a Merrick flossy. I researched that company like it was my job as i had heard nothing but great things about them. Their products are all natural, found no complaints, etc. Spoke to my vet and it turned out, the flossy was the culprit. It was a completely random trigger and yes, seizures can be cause by something ingested. We took away the flossies and he has never had another seizure. Can you think of anything like that? Has he had a change in diet?

  • F/U: We got the results and the good news is it is NOT cancer. I am soso relieved about this. However, it does look like Holmie has a liver problem :( But, it is managable with meds and he should be right as rain once we go for some more tests and figure out the appropriate dose. I am still sad for my little guy, but very optimistic that this is easily treatable!

Thank you again for all your kind words and advice ladies :)
