Engagement Announcement Help!

Help Knotties!

Both my parents are remarried. I am close to my stepdad, only met my stepmom twice in 11 years....

His father is deceased  but mom is remairried. Stepdad raised him.

How do I word parents for a engagement announcement for our local paper??

Re: Engagement Announcement Help!

  • Wedding announcement? Like the kind that are in the paper?

I don't recall those even mentioning things like parents. In my area, they're more like:

Bride and Groom were married on March 12, 2012 at Local Church Name. Bride is a graduate of MTSU and works as a teacher. Groom is a Vanderbilt alum, and is a police officer. Best wishes to the happy couple!

In our area, it's common in e-annoucements to say:

Dana and Douglas Lastname along with Joe and Diane lastname, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Lastname to Travis Lastname. Travis Lastname is the son of Tom and Sue Lastname of City, State.

I literally C&Pd this from our newspaper of people that I know and just changed the names.
  • Do youhave to write the announcement yourself?  A lot of papers have a form for you to fill out, which they use to write the announcement themselves.

<div>Oh sorry for my wording then, a wedding announcement is for after the wedding. An engagement announcement, is well, announcing your engagement.</div><div>
</div><div>Ours are kinda different, because information about the wedding is publicized. Basically Jess's wording, but also: The bride and groom will be wed in so and so church at 5:00 pm on x day. </div>

We didn't do an e-annoucement in the paper, but I don't think I would have said anything beyond, "The couple is planning a December wedding in City, State"

You don't want creepers coming to the wedding.

Joe and Jane Smith of Chicago and Robert and Mary Jones of Peoria, announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily Jones, to John Doe. John is the son of David and Nancy Smith of Daleville, and the late James Doe.  Emily is a graduate of Johnson University and works for Community Medical Center. John is a graduate of Green College and works for Mavis Advertising. A June wedding is planned.
    Or like this:
John Doe and Emily Jones announce their engagement.  Emily is the daughter of Joe and Jane Smith of Chicago and Robert and Mary Jones of Peoria, and John is the son of David and Nancy Smith of Daleville, and the late James Doe.  Emily is a graduate of Johnson University and works for Community Medical Center. John is a graduate of Green College and works for Mavis Advertising. A June wedding is planned.

I agree. Ask the paper if they have a form. I actually am the editorial assistant at my town's newspaper and I write up the engagement announcements. Usually they are worded thus:

Mr. and Mrs. (so and so) of (town's name) announce the engagement of their daughter, (so and so) to (groom's name), son of Mr. and Mrs. (groom's parents). A (month, year) wedding is planned.

If you are announcing your own engagement in your own local paper, maybe this:

Pigleta, daughter of (Mother and step-father) and (father and step-mother) announces her engagement to (groom's name), son of (mother and step-father's name) and the late (father's name).

In my town, so many family members are listed in engagement, wedding, and birth announcements, that it's not unusual to see many re-married names and step-parents/grandparents, etc. If it doesn't confuse you or the people who know you, I would list everyone.
