Vintage Fur

I'm having a winter wedding and have been given a lovely vintage mink stole as a gift which I'm thinking of wearing when we leave the ceremony.   I would never buy fur for myself, but I'm not sure how I feel about wearing something that was produced a long time ago.....on one hand I think it still propetuates the novelty of wearing fur, but on the other hand I figure hey, it is vintage and it was given to me as a gift....it's just going to go to waste otherwise.

Would you guys be disgusted/disturbed if you went to a wedding where the bride wore fur for her exit?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Vintage Fur

  • I'm not a fur fan, but I wouldn't assume that it was real honestly.

There may be people that would be very disgusted with this choice though... So know your guests, I suppose.
  • Oops!  I meant to say that I would be wearing it when we left the reception...not that it makes a difference...

I'd wear it if I were you. I love fur and have been actively looking for a vintage mink stole, so I'm pretty jealous that you got one for a gift. Like you, I would never buy new fur, but I think it's perfectly fine to wear vintage fur.
  • I agree with cfas that unless you have a guest that will actually cause a scene, you should go for it.  Hopefully people realize that even if they are personally opposed to wearing fur no matter how old the piece is, different people have different priorities, and most people would sound hypocritical if they called you out on fur (do they wear leather?  blood diamonds?  clothing made in a sweatshop?).
  • i'd wear it.  i have a vintage mink coat and have worn it a number of times in NYC without any problems.
no one is going to bring paint to your wedding to throw on it!
and they are deliciously warm and toasty!
  • I'm totally against wearing fur, but honestly I think most guests will assume its faux since it's so easy to find them now that look/feel real. I would wear it. It's your day and people will get over it (if they even realize it's real).
  • i have the same issue!  my grandmother gave me hers.  the same grandmother that made me cry when i was 8 because she gave a rabbit fur coat and told me what it was made out of.  (really, who thinks an 8yo will repsond well to a coat made out of bunnies?!)

it's beautiful but i would never buy real fur for myself.  it's vintage and already exists though so i don't see the harm in it.

    but i digress....

as pp said wear it if u want to!  but be prepared that someone might have a moral issue and be rude enough to take it up w/u at your wedding

  • good stuff.  i don't think any of my guests would oppose, but i wanted to see what you all thought.

    Thanks :)

<div>I have no problem whatsoever with vintage fur - it's already been sold and resold usually at that point and there is really no undoing it.  I think it is more disrespectful at that point to just discard it.</div><div>
</div><div>If I know someone is wearing brand new fur, yeah, that bothers me.  It's just so unnecessary and cruel.</div>

This is how I feel--it isn't better that the animal died in vain IMO.  I'm not anti-fur, but I wouldn't buy it myself.  I'd wear it and enjoy it--I'm sure it's lovely!  Besides, any crazy PETA-type guests will probably have left their buckets of paint at home <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

<div>Nothing to do with this but I just peeked at your bio - did you have your reception in a library??  It looks so awesome!</div>
  • I wouldn't be. I don't think I'd be able to wear it personally, but vintage looks vintage in my experience. My mom also has a vintage mink which belonged to my grandmother and she has worn it in the past.

I'd probably assume it was vintage or faux.  If you want to wear it, go for it.
  • I have a vintage either fox or mink, and I'd love to have a reason to wear it. As it is now, every time I open it, I sneeze.
Unfortunately, here, it's either "go big, or go home" when it comes to warmth.  :(

  • i wore my grandmother's vintage mink stole for my december wedding and (admitting my bias) it was not only sentimental, but absolutely gorgeous if i do say so myself.  these faux fuzzy white things are just tacky.  vintage fur is elegant and classic.  i also took pictures all over NYC and no one made any comments or anything.  go for it!

  • I would side eye any fur - vintage or otherwise.  To me it perpetuates the idea that fur is fashionable, which creates a market for more fur.  And for those who can't afford mink?  There is rabbit, cat, dog or racoon available.  It's a booming market in China-especially for trim or smaller pieces.

To me, it's a dead thing draped over your shoulders.  Is that extreme?  Perhaps but that is how I feel.
