Crinoline? Hoops? Nothing?

I have a couple of different pictures of my dress - some with the skirt hanging straight down in a way that it would sort of cling/flow around my legs. Other pictures show it kind of puffed out. I was wearing a simple slip, not a crinoline or anything, when I tried it on. Now, I'm separated from my dress and I won't be around it again until about a month before the wedding, and I can't decide what I should get to go under it.

I think it looks nice when it's kind of fluffed out, but I don't think that layers of tulle, like a crinoline, would necessarily "go" very well. However, would a hoop skirt petticoat dealie be too stiff for how flowy the dress is? I don't really have an "eye" for this kind of thing, so help is appreciated.

Here's a link to the album of the day I tried on the dress - the first and second pictures are the two I'm kind of talking about.

Also, here's the dress on someone who doesn't have a burger for a head or a propensity for thumbs upping, if that helps (thanks to RachnRich, still!).

Thanks very much for any opinions.

  • I think I like it better hanging naturally but honestly, it's really hard to tell the difference.

  • I like the way it sits on picture number 2, WITH burger head.

  • I love your dress.  The draping on the shoulders and the lack of "pouf" from when you tried it on remind me of grecian dresses, I'd keep it that way.
  • Having worn a hoop skirt under a dress (hello prom  1985!), I'd avoid that if you can. If you sit down the wrong way, you'd better hope you're wearing something interesting underneath it!

I didn't have to wear anything with my "real" first wedding gown - it had layers of tulle underneath it to make it stand out a little from me, so I'm not sure about adding a crinoline.

  • I don't think I look at the pictures often enough because that train is a looooot longer than I remembered.

dani - I know, it's so subtle. I'm trying to remember how it moved when I moved, because I wouldn't be comfortable with it clinging to my legs, but I really just didn't think of any of that when trying it on.

pirategal - Thank you very much!

crfische - I was thinking about wearing a burger to the rehersal.

  • I do like the way it looks natural in your photos. It looks like the model is wearing it natural too.

  • That's a really pretty dress.

I think a full-ish slip would work well and make it flow out, but a full-on crinoline might be a bit much.

Can you borrow or get a cheap crinoline and then decide right before the wedding which you'll wear?

  • missy - HA, oh man. That is something to keep in mind, I'm not especially graceful.

lovethebeach - No, there's nothing different under it in any of the pictures. The shop attendant just give it an extra fluff while I was standing there.

  • I think the model looks like she's wearing SOMETHING under it. Maybe a not very fluffy crinoline?

I'd stay away from the hoops, but I like how the crinoline makes it look a little...cleaner looking, maybe?

  • I really like the natural flowy-ness and I think stuffing crinoline up there is going to a) be hot and b) take away from the "look" of that dress.

  • crfische - Yeah, cleaner I think is a good word. The dress is super super super soft and flowy, which is really nice, but also gives it the propensity to look like I threw it on while running to meet the UPS guy at the front door. I didn't even know that the train could spread out in such a nice neat circle until Rach found the model pictures for me.

msmerymac - Thank you! I'm always pleasantly surprised when I look at the pictures after a long time, if that makes sense. As for making a decision at the last minute, I'd like to, but I'm not going to be able to even start fittings until right up pretty close to the wedding (it's in PA, I'm in AZ), and my legs are SO SHORT that the hem is going to be a major issue, so I figured I'd need to have the under garments set so that it could be done accurately. Is that not totally necessary? Because if I have some flexibility, I'd definiteily like to try out some different options. I just don't want to wait so long that I rope myself into buying from the store - that's always so many times more expensive than ordering online, you know?

  • Nope, all the pictures were taken with just a close fitting slip for modesty purposes while changing. I don't really know what happened with that second picture - I was just extra fluffed.

  • Yeah, the dresses all look different when the salesperson does her "I'm making the bed and throwing a sheet on the bed" fluffing thing.  Plus it looks like you're standing on one of those pedestal things that's probably holding the bottom of the dress out in the second photo.  You could certainly have someone fluff it for some photos if you just want that look for a little while.

  • I vote no criny---I think it looks great they way it falls naturally.

I also super heart that I still get props for my mad google skills.
