Backing out of Photography contract?

I am not sure if this is the right board or not - but it was the only one that seemed to fit!
I am getting married on September 28, 2013 and picked a photographer right away with no research (shame on me)  The photos she takes are beautiful - but we are trying to save some money where we can.  I just attended a bridal expo and I can get a different photographer who also takes beautiful photos, and a very similar package, for almost $2000 less.
I did sign a contract with the original photographer and would lose a $200 deposit.
I am wondering if it is rude or considered bad to cancel the original photographer to save money and go with the new photographer?

Re: Backing out of Photography contract?

  • I think you have so much time until your wedding that your current photog could def find another wedding for that date. It's always better to reserach before hand but it looks like you know that now :) At least you are giving them plenty of time to find someone else to replace them. You could also try to negotiate a lower rate with them and see what they say. Def worth a shot!

  • It's a business deal, the photographer should not take it personally.  I would just be honest and say that you love her work, but you've looked at your budget again and found someone less expensive that you decided to go with.  Read your contract carefully and consider your options.  I would post on your local board (to the left) and try to get some reviews of the photographers that you are considering.  Compare their packages (are albums, prints, engagement photos, etc., included?  second shooter?).  Do your research, because you don't want to change your mind again.
  • I would wait to cancel the contract. Do more research to make sure you wamt to cancel the original photographer and go with the second one. You would hate to cancel the original sign a new contract and end up regretting canceling or finding someone you prefer. I would even discuss this with your current photographer. Maybe there is a reason you do not know for the price difference.

  • If you have done your research and prefer the new one, you can cancel your contract and forfeit your deposit.

Losing a $200 deposit isn't bad when you are saving $2000 but I would make sure you are okay with this photographer before you lose your date & deposit.

  • Also make sure there is no penalty in your contract for breaking it... there may be a clause that will have you liable for more of the contracted price for canceling or backing out when the wedding is still taking place.
  • Check your contract really carefully to make sure you understand what the penalty would be for cancelling (it might go up the longer you wait).

If you're sure you want to cancel, then just call your photographer and explain that as much as you love her work, you can't fit her into your budget.   It's not rude as long as you follow the terms of the contract and are honest with her about why you can't use her services.
