Early wedding presents

I apologize since this has probably been asked 100 times.

i'm getting married in October and I recently received an email over Facebook from and old high school friend asking what my PayPal address is so he can send us a wedding gift.

What is appropriate with things like this?  Am I allowed to use it before the wedding?  If so, am I supposed to use it to buy something off the registry?

Kind of caught me off guard... and I certainly don't want to use something like that to pay my phonebill, you know?

thanks.

  • PayPal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. Lots of people use it to sell and purchase things on e-bay as well as other sites.

It is a little weird that he wants to give you money, but I guess if he wants to let him. Wedding gifts, even money, are not supposed to be used until after the wedding. Just incase anything were to happen you could give them back, even cash.

  • The problem with paypal is they're going to charge you a fee for receiving money. It's not much, but for example, I sold something on the TTB, and the total was $35. After fees, I received $33.68.

  • I would just give him the number. He offered, you didn't ask - obviously it's what's most convenient for him.

If you specify that the reason for sending the money is "Personal" rather than for a purchase, there isn't a fee.

  • Actually - as long as the guest approached you about it - i think it's a really efficient way to handle this. He doesn't have to write a check and mail it - he does a transfer, you have the monetary gift he wanted you to have. Fast and easy.

I wouldn't advertise this but if a guest asked because they wanted to handle it this wa, it would make things easy for the gift giver.

But again, i wouldn't advertise it, list it on my website, etc..

Ack. I always just do business because I assumed I'd get protections from the purchase if I labeled it that way.

  • Let the gift giver give his or her wedding gift however he or she wants to & be happy it's not the crystal bowl of doom or 1,000 pennies.  Send a TY note when you get any gift & a second TY note if the gift was money used to purchase something.
  • Thanks for the feedback Ladies!!  Very helpful.  :)
