Dictionary banned from school?

A Southern California school board has pulled the Merriam-Webster dictionary off its shelves after a parent complained about the entry “oral sex.”

The collegiate-level dictionary was being used in grade four and five classrooms. The school now promises to begin a thorough scouring of the dictionary for other offensive entries.

Re: Dictionary banned from school?

  • There are so many issues here...

1 - The classroom should have grade-appropriate dictionaries so the kids can learn to use them properly.

2 - The result of the complaint should have been to quietly exchange the dictionaries for grade-appropriate ones.  The offending ones should have gone to the high school.

3 - Parents who make these ridiculous sorts of complaints should not be pandered to.

4 - The school needs to stand up for education/knowledge and tell the ridiculous parents they won't be given a forum for their stupidity.

  • in high school we use to get around those blocked sites or words. It wasn't too hard.. This is crazy as all had stated already.
In 4th and 5th grade you get your spelling words, you're going to look them up, do what you go to do and close the book. Can't they just rip the page out and not give words that are on that page.

Some people need to find other things to complain about other then a dictionary.

Dictionary.com is one of my favorite places since I suck at spelling and lack of definition...

  • Heck, if your kid was in Hitchcock, TX, they'd learn how to perform oral and anal sex from a school board member during a supposedly "motivational" speech.. in Middle school.
