Hey, Rach (and other Ohioans)...

Know about either of these 2 schools?

Ohio Wesleyan
and
John Carroll

There are job openings for DH at both of them.  Any thoughts?

  • Just moved to the area, but they are big names around here as far as Colleges go.I'm originally from Southern Ohio, Wittenbergs town of Springfield. But just moved here a year ago. My FI says there are well known and highly regarded schools. Good Luck.
P.S. It snows ALOT here!! Cant you find him a job in Hawaii??  LOL

  • I love snow!  DH is from Michigan, so he's used to it, and I went to college in waaaaay upstate NY and loved it.

Besides, anything is better than the oppressive heat during the summer down here in AR.

Thanks for the reviews!  We'll definitely keep that in mind.  :)

  • By the way Sucrets if you end up coming here lets us know we can help ya with all the other things you'd need to know also. I'm sure there's plenty of Ohioans here that are happy to help.

  • Meh, we're in job limbo and it sucks. I've even been contemplating going back to school (yikes!).

DH is out doing something geeky with friends and I'm planning on a gilmore girls marathon with lots of wine. Not that relaxing after a killer semester isn't fun, but if I don't find a job soon I'm going seriously going to go crazy.

How have you guys been? Busy I'm sure getting ready for you GIRL (yay!). You guys are looking for jobs outside of Arkansas I gather?
  • **delurking**  I don't know much about John Carroll except that it is near Cleveland.    OWU is really close to me.  The school is pretty small (enrollment wise) but the buildings on campus are pretty.  OWU is in Delaware which is a big bunch of nothing (as in the local high schools get out of school bc the Delaware County fair is a big deal) but it's probably < 30 minutes to Columbus and only 10-15 minutes to Polaris which has a lot of shopping/food/stuff to do.

The weather at John Carroll will be much worse.  We have 3" of snow in Cbus and people are freaking out.  Cleveland would not bat an eye at that.
  • kd - thanks for the offer!  It's still really early for job postings, but those are 2 that are a pretty good fit for H.

lynds - boo for job searching.  :(  I hope it starts to pick up for you guys!  Your night sounds like lots of fun, though.  I wish I could have some wine.  We are DEFINITELY looking to leave AR.  There's really no chance of B getting a job here, anyway.  He's here to do research and the type of job that he would want is already filled by someone pretty young, so unless B is still working under him as a post doc, we're out of here.

Britt - thanks for the info!  Who knows, H might not apply to either school if there are other openings, but I figure it can't hurt to know what the natives think about the schools.

  • Well good luck to you guys too then :) I know you were hoping to move anyway, glad you have the chance!
  • Yeah, well, we just have to see if he gets a job this year or if he needs more time to get published.  Throw in my job and the baby, and things just get all effed up.  *sigh*  I hate not knowing ANYTHING.

I'm from upstate NY and your school is as far upstate as upstate can be! (Great music education program, though, I hear.) And everyone says it's definitely colder and snowier there than in most of the rest of the state, which is saying something.

Haha, yes!  Great music ed program, but fuucking cold.  We didn't get that much snow, though, it just would never melt.  Since it's further away from the lake, it doesn't get as much as Syracuse, Buffalo, etc.

I loved it, though.  I could very easily live in a climate like that.

Oh, and it was cold here today, but people don't know how to DRESS for it.  Layers and a wool sweater and I was fine!

Ahhhh.....if I knew I'd get knocked up this fast, we would have waited a bit.  Just because it'd be easier to plan a move without an infant, lol.  But I'm incredibly thankful and feel lucky that it didn't take us long.  I can't wait to meet her!  Anyway, it will work out, but I hate not being able to plan anything in the future at all.  We could wind up here for another year.  Who the eff knows.

  • Well you're right though -  the bright side is that with all the uncertainty, you know that you can get pregnant and you're soon going to have a DAUGHTER which is beyond exciting!

Phew, that was a lot of rainbows. I'll agree though, the not knowing sucks. I'm not much of a planner, but not knowing where I'll be in a year can be a bit scary. I feel your pain.
  • Sucrets,
Abbalish is from Ohio.  If you are friends on FB, you can ping her.  If you aren't, you're my friend and she is my friend so look her up...

  • Sorry for being late to the game---we strolled out to Costo to buy large quantities of food random food items.

I know of both of them---OWU is much more prestigious, in a historical higher ed kind of way, than JC. Like a PP said, JC is in Cleveland---where the neighborhoods can be kind of hit or miss; I don't know much about the OWU area.

Obviously, both are small liberal arts types---and I *think* JC has some religious affiliation, although I'm not sure if the ties are strong---I believe the same can be said for OWU though.

But, considering I'm not sure exactly what kind of institution B is at now---I'd just like to mention that *if* you guys would consider a move to Ohio, a small liberal arts institution would be the way to go for him--right now, economy wise, LA's colleges have more financial stability, especially in Ohio, than do state-funded schools. Chances are he'd make a high starting salary, tenure would be an easier obstacle, and his raises would outweigh anything he would get at state schools.
    (just my two cents).

  • JC is Catholic, I believe. I went to a Catholic high school and knew some people who went there.

  • Hey!  Sorry, I napped.

lynds - I know...I can't believe I'm going to be a mom to a little girl!  It's still so surreal.

smokey - I think I'm friends with her, I'll dig through and see.  :)

rach - thanks for that perspective about tenure and salary and stuff!  That's definitely something to consider as he starts to look.

mery - the website says it's Jesuit.  DH and I are not religious at all, but hopefully that won't matter.

This is just the start of his job search...hopefully some more openings will pop up soon.  Not that these are bad choices, but they're not the exact positions he's looking for - he'd rather do more research instead of teaching.

My guess is he'd be happy at a large, state funded research institution. They'd have more opportunities for big-scale research projects---but, you never know Wink

  • Lurker from Cleveland here. I'm about 20 minutes from JC. I work down the street from the university.

JC is Jesuit, but not overly religious.

The area around John Carroll is hit or miss, but there are some nice areas to live in not that far from it (within a half an hour).

I would definitely work at a private college over a state school in Ohio right now. Much more stability.

If you decide on NE Ohio, be prepared for snow. John Carroll is in the secondary snow belt. DH and I live in the primary snow belt. We have about 3 feet of snow and we should have at least another foot by tomorrow. JC probably will have 2 to 2 1/2 ft by tomorrow.

  • I don't know too much about John Carroll.  Ohio Wesleyan is pretty close to me - bonus!  It's well-reputed, too.  I vote for that!
  • Thanks, guys!  I love it when lurkers answer.  :)  And you, too, abba!  You're rarely around here anymore.  :(

  • We lived in Ohio for the years between middle school and Masters Degree, and then I came back and worked at a small liberal arts college for a while.

My opinion is the same as Rach:  Ohio Wesleyan is fabulous, JCU is good.
