Bleepity Bleep Bleep

I just lost all of my work for a homework assignment due tonight, because of the blue screen of death popping up on my laptop. GRAWR. I'm pissed.

Please share your technology horror stories here.

Im going to be an asshole and point out I have had no tech headaches since getting my mac ;)
  • LOL! I'm on a work laptop, and we're PC based. I have a Mac and a PC at home :)

  • I didn't back up my files on my last computer. I lost 7 year's worth of pictures of my children.
  • I took notes on an entire novel for a short paper that was due yesterday. I lost the book, then found it, but all of my notes were gone.

I swear I got the one Mac in the world that was a total lemon.  I had one my first year of law school and it lasted 9 months.  I had to have a new hard drive, motherboard, and electrical system installed, and then they magically lost all the records of the repairs and refused to acknowledge my invoices to give me a replacement.  It was the worst computer I've ever owned, but apparently I'm the only one that has had this experience.

I love/have loved my iPhone and various iPods, though.

  • When I was finished with college, and had my computer back at my parents house, they were not um, careful with it.  Actually, they left it plugged into a regular outlet during a thunderstorm and it got zinged.  Bye bye 4 years of research papers!

    Oh that sucks.

Whenever I put new pictures on the computer I also upload them to Walgreens photo, because that happened to me before, just not to that extent.

That sucks and is really odd! Im very disappointed you got the one mac lemon and it ruined the experience for you. My husbands emac still runs good as new (its almost 9 years old now), and his imac is still great (3+ years). My imac is newer, a year old, but its never given me problems. Hopefully one day, if you brave a mac again, you will get proper quality. That really blows!
  • I work in IT.  Sure you want me to do that?  :D  I have TONS of stories of how people are idiots and do really stupid crap to computers and then get pissy when they break.  Like. . . using the CD tray as a coffee cup holder.  Or the mouse as a foot pedal (like the treadle on her sewing machine).

In any case - have you gotten back in yet?  It might not be lost.  It might have autosaved.  Search for all files of that type modified in the last 24 hours and open them.  It's probably got a stupid temp filename.

  • Oh no that sucks Sara, I would have cried so much :(

I'm a Systems Engineer so I work with technology all the time.

The latest one was not caused by me, however greatly impacted my life for the last 2 weeks. One of our customers were upgrading their servers. Without getting too technical, someone corrupted their 2 Terrabyte SAN, we lost 1.2 TB of data is was horrifying....

Because of what I see at work I have 4 working copies of just about everything to avoid this

  • I have a server that's a lemon.  It does stupid stuff all the time.

    * set its own clock backwards by 37 hours once.  I have date driven software on it.  The software crashed when it couldn't figure out the past from the future.

    * three different cracked processors, at different times

    * network card went bad - both primary and backup

    * any number of shutdowns.  Where it just turns itself off, for no reason.

    It's getting replaced this summer.

I was just going to say this! I remember spending about 5 hours finishing my paper in college and "losing" my paper from my computer. This in turn made me lose my shiiit. I started angrily crying and started throwing things. I realized I needed to cool down and turned off my computer.
I went upstairs, watched some Conan O'Brien and decided I wasn't going to bed with nothing done. I went into the office and turned my computer on- TA-DAH!! There is was! Maybe this will happen to you <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

  • Oh, Jano. . .

A woman who thought a laser mouse was to be used like a laser pointer.

A man who didn't realize he had to plug the power strip into the wall to power the computer on, even if the computer's power cord was plugged in to the strip.

A guy who had 9 years of email in one Outlook .pst file.  Half his harddrive.  They corrupt at less than a gig.  We tiptoed around his computer till we fixed it.

A woman who couldn't comprehend that some computers are touch screen, but most aren't.

The guy that thought you could shoot ANY laptop with a grenede launcher like in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith.  We have those same ones, the ruggidized Panasonics, around here for a specific group of users.  They have run over them with cars, dropped refrigerators on them, dropped them in a full sink, etc.  Not to mention spilling every kind of food ever on the keyboard.  And they don't understand why they don't work perfectly.

And OMG, my family and friends are incapable of using virus protection.  I have cleaned so much crap off their computers.

I think it was the first roll-out of some "upgrades" to the MacBook, because I later heard about a few other people that bought theirs in June 2006 that had very similar issues.

I really liked it when it did work, though.  Just...that was not very often.

I almost didn't graduate high school because of a combination of computer/self stupidity.

I had this enormous research paper that was 1/4 of the final grade in English due on the last day of school.  You could turn it in early if you were worried about your grade, and have a chance to do some extra credit.  Me being arrogant and seemingly awesome at writing papers, waited until the last minute.

I stayed up until 3 am finishing it, and every once in a while I hit save while I was working.  However, I kept saving it onto one of those old floppy A drive discs, instead of the hard drive.

When I was finished at 3:00, I tried to print, and couldn't, because something was wrong with my printer.  So I saved it a final time to the floppy, and then took it school with me in the morning.  I got there early, and went to the library to print it, and my disc was corrupted.  I lost the entire 20 page paper.

So I failed senior English, a class I had maintained an A in all year.  I went down to the county's public school headquarters, and paid a shitload of money for E-school, and had to do a full semester of English with a combination of CD-Roms and internet assignments in 3 days.  This involved building a website about Alfred Lord Tennyson (which my talented brother whipped up for me in 10 minutes), reading a bunch of novels and taking exams on them (thank you cliffsnotes.com + Blockbuster + Google), and vocabulary tests (thanks again, Google).

Anyway, I ended up getting it done on time, getting an A, and graduating with my class, and the university that had already accepted me never had to know any of this.  My final transcript did not reflect the E-school crap at all.

Lesson learned.  Today, all important documents now get saved to the hard drive and the flash drive.

  • When your job involves lifting refrigerators with an airsled, it can happen.  ANYTHING can happen.  Between my users, the techs, and consumers, I've got all manner of wacky stories about all sorts of things.  Some of them can't be told for fear of outting who I work for, but let me tell ya - if you put clothing detergent in your dish washer, you're not too bright.

  • And this isn't a technology fail, but laptop story...

Once in college I shared a hotel room with like 12 people, and in the middle of the night I saw a drunk girl get up on the desk, pull down her pants, and pee on someone's computer.  Another poor guy was under the desk, so.... yeah.  Gross.  She wasn't invited to any more parties.
