My story full of fail

So my name is Julia. That awful movie, The Wedding Singer came out when I was in middle school. I was already a very unfortunate looking kid. Add to that everyone thinking yelling "Hey Julia Gulia' in the hallways was HILARIOUS, and middle school pretty much sucked. I get the Julia Gulia thing every now and then and I just roll my eyes and be a smartass back about how original they are.

So I got it bad when I started work. I joked back and I thought it was over. Well, dude comes up to me (with the other guys hanging around, waiting on him to go to lunch) and he was like...have you ever seen The Wedding Singer? And I made a sarcastic comment back and ended with, Wow, you are SO original to think of that all by yourself! Again, totally joking.

So he comes back from lunch and looks like a kicked puppy. Apparently, he didn't know everyone else at work had made fun of me for it AND he really thought he offended me. Apparently, sarcasm works on everyone in the office but him : /

  • That movie's cool and all, but today...in 2010...if I met someone named Julia, I wouldn't make that connection at ALL.

  • That's ok, he needs to toughen up! :)

My story full of fail is from two weeks ago when I was interviewing a new guy for a position. I got up and tried to walk past him in my office so I could the way and apparently something brushed up against my butt of something. I thought it was the chair, but he started freaking out and was like "oh my god, that wasn't my hand I swear." Awkward, party of 2! Now I'll feel bad if he doesn't get the job because he'll probably think I turned him in for trying to cop a feel...
  • FWIW I think I saw the movie once way back when it came out and couldn't tell you anything about it, especially the Julia Gulia thing. I feel like that movie is old enough that if he knows about it, he should assume you've heard it countless times. Could you maybe talk to him about it or something?

  • And here's my story of fail:

A couple weeks ago I was interviewing for a job. The town I went to high school in is over an hour and a half away, and people from the town I grew up in had never heard of my school. When I tell people where I went, I have to explain all sorts of other things before anyone knows what I'm talking about. So in this interview, we were going through me resume, I was like "Well I went to this high school, I'll give you five bucks if you can tell me where it is" and one of the ladies goes "Oh yeah, I know where that is, I went to college with people from there." I was so shocked that someone actually knew that I got completely flustered in what I was talking about. I somehow still passed that interview, but didn't get the job.

The only time I made a Julia Guilia joke was when one of my former coworkers was getting married. Her name was Monica, nn Mo and she was marrying a guy with a last name that rhymed with Mo. So one of my other coworkers and I were like, "No. You can't. WTF, that's like Julia Guilia."

I think it's a cute movie, though. I went to go see it on my first date ever, when I was 15.

Try a deadpan response. "What? My last name isn't Guilia. It doesn't rhyme with my first name." Like you're really confused. Because, seriously, it's not even remotely funny.

I used to get called "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm". Everyone thought it was really hilarious, even though I didn't really know what they were talking about. And they were adults calling me that when I was 5 or 6.

Oh and when "Baby Got Back" came out, people would constantly start saying "Oh my god, Becky look at her butt" anytime I was around. I still get it once in awhile when the song is played.

  • I have a friend named Julia who gets that all the time and she always looks like she wants to TP the person who said it.

I'm an adult now and I still don't get it. :(

On a semi-related funny name note, when I get married my middle and last name will rhyme with gangrene.  I never use my middle name, so probably no one will even know and won't even make the connection if they do, but it still bothers me how it's going to sound. Luckily I love FI enough to get over it.  ;-)

And I've definitely conversed with a Sally McNally in work before.
  • We gave our dog a silly middle name (well actually a normal middle name, Paige), because it's funny how it goes with FI's last name.  We promise we will never name a child that though!

I seem to remember seeing it put on at a children's theater, and I think that's what started it. I don't remember ever reading the book or anything though.

  • The secretary at my old middle school was Maureen Morine.  What are the chances your married last name would be pronounced the same as your first name? I think I probably would have kept my maiden name in that case.

  • Um my name is Kelly Ripa, so every where I go I hear "So how is Regis". The first few times it was funny, now it is just annoying. The worse was when I was in the ER earlier this month when I dropped a laptop on my foot and thought I broke it. I was in sooooo much pain and the Dr. in the ER made the comment. I almost started to cry. I can't wait to get married and change my last name!
  • my name is Katrina - like the hurricane.  I use it to my advantage to get people to remember my name. even though I know it was devastating and so not funny, i tell people "yeah, like the hurricane - only I'm nice."
