Hola. Insurance Question

Since I'm graduating in 3 weeks (holy eff) I need some health insurance (I get dropped from my parent's policy after the first of the year).

Any recs? I don't need anything fancy, I don't go to the doctor hardly ever, just my yearly gyno check-up and some BCP,

Re: Hola. Insurance Question

  • If you go to the doctor that rarely, you might want to look into the kinds of insurance that covers things like accidents and ER visits, but not routine preventative care.  It's a lot cheaper and easier to come by (my car insurance provider offers it).  You can do your yearly OBGYN visit at a clinic like PP that offers sliding fee scales then too.
  • You should also see if you have any brokers in your area. They should be free to you, and the benefit is that they will show you all your different plan options and do the legwork for you.

  • I'm coming Nebb!

JK, your car insurance offers it? I should call Farm Bureau then.

  • It's worth at least checking into.  I mean, if you're relatively healthy, you're young, you probably don't need a lot of doctors' visits, so it wouldn't be a huge loss to go without insurance for the amount of time (which would hopefully be short, of course) it takes for you to find a job and start coverage with them.  But there's always the fear of what if you get in an accident or get really super sick and have to go to the ER or something, and that's what my plan covers.  I can't remember what it's called--they have a name, obviously.
  • Ok, called my dudes and I can get a policy through Companion Life for $90 a month. I know that's not that high, it's just a cost I wasn't expecting, so that makes me sad :(.

JK, I would have a job (more than likely) by August, so that's more time than I'd like to go uncovered. Not to mention, my BC is $90 every three months if I'm not covered. Bleh.

I'm so tempted just to say screw it and go to the Health Department for my check-up and prescription, but then that shiit is expensive. Boo.

I think they are called catastrophic insurance policies or something like that.  We were looking into them when FI was unemployed.
  • Whit, FWIW, you don't want to start your job without some sort of coverage; maintain a coverage even if it's bare minimum between losing the coverage with your parents and your employment.  Always try to maintain insurance coverage; it's a PITA, but with pre-existing BS, you never know what your new carrier will say.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Missy, I'm sure you're right. I just hate parting with hard earned money! ;)

  • You want to have a major insurance at the very least.

Does your school have a health clinic?  My sister bought a years worth of BC for real cheap right before she graduated because she didn't no how long she would only have major medical.  It's worth a shot if they do.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ah, another good idea lynda. I'll check into it.

You may be referring to a health savings account. I don't know much about it, but I think that's the name.

  • I have Golden Rule. Check them out!

Also, $90/month is nothing compared to what you could potentially have to pay if you do NOT get basic converage and something unexpected happens! ;)
