NWR: What the fvck does this "dress code" mean?

FI and I are surprising my SM in January (she is receiving a pretty prestigious award in her field and has NO idea - hence why I won't give a lot of details on the off chance she finds me here)...

I asked what the dress code was, and he said "casual but not just t-shirts". What the eff does that mean?! (Event is indoors, at noon-ish in CO in January.)

P.S. This is a P&R.

  • I would probably wear nice pants and a casual/nice top. Better to err on the side of being a little too dressed up.
  • Very cool for your SM Kelly....I would agree with the above posters, wear nice pants and a casual but "not tshirt" type top.  You will probably have pictures taken with your family so you will want to look nice.
  • I also agree with the above posters.

  • Polo shirt and jeans for guys.. dressy top, cardigan, dark jeans and boots for girls? That's what we'd wear!

  • When H won a research award, he wore a suit, and I wore a Diane von Furstenburg wrap dress.  I wouldn't just go one above t-shirt.  Just sayin'.
  • I would say nice slacks or a skirt with a blouse or sweater.   Because this is a professional award for your SM, then I would wear something appropriate for a professional environment.

  • Just got more clarification from Dad... he'll be in a suit, but he is also a board member and will be acting in accordance (running meetings, ushering in speakers, etc.).

He said nice jeans and a sweater would be fine for me; nice jeans and a button down for FI. I'll probably pack nice jeans (gah. need to go shopping - put a hole in my last nice pair last week!) for the dinner on the night we get there and then pack a nice skirt/sweater/boots for the more formal function where SM will be recognized. I'll encourage FI to wear slacks, since I don't think he even owns a pair of khakis (in fact, he only wears one pair of slacks).

Thanks everyone! I'm super excited for her and proud of her! We haven't always been super close (simply because she married my dad after I was already done with HS), but we've always gotten along and she makes my dad happy. What more could I ask for?
  • I would just wear some nice (but not to dressy) pants and a pretty top.  I guess "office appropriate" might be the right words?
  • Glad you got some clarification, i was going to say business casual which is what sounds like you have in mind.
