How many showers did you have?

Just out of curiosity. By the time it's all said and done, I will have had three, which feels excessive and kind of makes me feel like I'm a gift grabby hoar. Is 3 normal? Or a lot, like I think?

Re: How many showers did you have?

  • I just had 1 shower.  However, I invited everyone from my job to the shower my MOH threw me so that they didn't feel like they had to throw me a work shower - so I probably would have had 2 if I weren't trying to avoid it.  :)
  • I'm just having one.

A girl on our month board had five... I think that's a lot.

  • I had 1 but I dont think 3 feels gift grabby unless the same people are invited to them.  If its like friends, work, your fam, his fam etc- its totally fine.

  • I just had 1. I don't think 3 is too bad... and it's not like they're your doing. You just have so many people that luff you, and they all want to throw you a party. :)

Yeah it'll be three different sets of people. FI's aunt threw me one and his side of the family came. My aunt's doing one for my side of the family. Then a really good friend is offered to do a Sunday brunch couple's shower, which we're inviting friends to.

  • I had 0 because they're not common here. I imagine that in the US I would have had one (I think a couple relatives would have thrown it, just knowing them).

3 seems like kind of a lot to me, but if it's 3 totally separate groups of people it's not necessarily a bad thing, just more than I'd expect.
  • Five.  One for each side of the family, one at work, one at church, and a "personal shower" with just close friends.  It felt terribly excessive.  I really didn't want them to throw me one at my church or work, but they insisted.  Embarassed

It is a lot.  I was mortified.

  • I had two, but they were 1000 miles apart, so it was mostly for location reasons.

    Was that you!  :)

It definitely is a lot but hey, if they're gonna throw you a party, you're gonna go.

ETA - I hadn't seen your reply yet!

  • I had three.  They were attended by different people (my side, fi's side, and church).  I felt a little strange at first too, but people really wanted to celebrate with me.

    I'm going to have 3:

Family "personal" (AKA lingerie) shower in Mass (this is a tradition in my family)

One from my BM's in Cincinnati

One from my FMIL in Tennessee

So it'll actually be different people at most of them.

No, it wasn't me...but I had the same amount.  lol

  • Oh yeah, and FMIL informed me that it is tradition in Tennessee to bring presents to the shower and not the reception.  So it's not totally gift grabby.
  • Two, one in CT (where I'm from) and one from MA (where FI is from).

I don't think it's gift-grabby to have three showers if people from different walks of life (his family, your family, your friends, your coworkers, etc.) are throwing them.  It's not like you're throwing one yourself.

I'm from southern Kentucky, and this is true of my area as well.  In fact, some people think it's completely rude to bring gifts to the wedding.  Weird?

  • Oh Georgia. That sounds wonderful :/ I keep waiting for my mom or FI's mom to start acting all nutso, but really, the only thing they've done out of the ordinary is ask me what they should wear to the wedding.

Yup, Knoxville (well Oak Ridge) is where my FI is from.

Interesting . . . . you know what else was weird?  They don't have Macy's in Knoxville.  I'm going to have to set up a registry at Belk (with similar/complementing stuff from Macy's) for FI's family.  I didn't even think about that until we started talking about registering and showers.

FI's family is from the middle of nowhere and I felt really bad for not being able to register at a place more convenient for them. But I wasn't going to register at the unfinished pine furtniture store, which is pretty much the only retail store in his hometown.

I think the only reason she went so crazy was because her other son had a super small shotgun wedding a few years ago and she never had her chance to be MOG (and experience actual planning) before. She has since gone back to her normal self.

Everybody ran their outfits by me (except my parents; they knew I trusted them to make their own choices). I couldn't care less, but it made them all feel better that I "approved" their selections. We're talking MIL, both GMIL's, my bio dad, my Gma...

Okay, that's way worse than just picking another department store.  Do they not even have like a Target/Walmart?

ETA: I mean if you had registered at the unfinished pine furniture store.  It makes me laugh.

Also from the middle of nowhere.  There is a little boutique in my hometown that everyone pressured me to register at.  But they've had the same dishes, etc...for the past 5 years practically and all of their home stuff is NMS.  So I refused, but guess what?  Still got like 20 gifts from there.  lol

  • I had none. It was a combination of no one having the money to host one, me feeling too guilty to have anyone go through the trouble, and me knowing hardly anyone would actually be there. My MIL and SIL wanted to take me out since I didn't have a bach party, but they didn'tn get into town until the night before the wedding and there wasn't time. And I haven't even seen them since the wedding.
  • Good, then it all worked out. :)
  • I like Belk.  It's associated with some other store.  Is it Peebles or Dillards?
They have one in London or Corbin that I shop at.

  • I didn't have a shower.  I prefer baths.
    image
  • I'll probably end up having one or two, depending on how small we want the parties to be. FI and I only have two aunts between the two of us, so we don't have a ton of extended family. My guest list will mostly consist of our friends and our parent's few close friends.

I might end up doing one shower with friends and family and one with a particular group of girlfriends who would add up to about 10-15 by themselves. My friend who is getting married next month just had her showers and they did one separate for this group of girlfriends. There were maybe 10-15 of us at a friends house and it was one of the most fun showers I've ever been to as a guest.

Probably Peebles.  FMIL recommended Belk over Dillards (which is the other major department store).  She said it was the usual place for people to register.

Although I always loved Dillards and their selection of formal dresses back in high school.
