Work Question

When your employer lays people off, do they give the employees any notice or is it a "don't come back tomorrow" kind of thing?  I'm curious.

Re: Work Question

  • My company basically says "we're letting you go, pack your necessities and we'll mail you the rest"

H's company gave a week or two notice.
  • Oh and my company doesn't even let you finish out the day. It's like... leave right now. The only exception I've seen is when my coworker who was laid off in February hadn't driven to work that day, so they let her wait until her husband came to pick her up. They weren't going to kick her outside when there was snow on the ground.

  • It all depends.....last years layoffs they were told end of Oct that their last day would be Dec 23rd. This year.....they were told and escorted out.
  • I would think that if people were getting laid off or fired, it would be expected that their mood toward the place probably isn't going to be the best, and who knows what they would do if they had a week to work after finding out they were fired. They probably want to make sure you don't take anything off your computer that is company property or pay you for being there when you're not going to be invested you're gonna be pissed.

We've never laid people off, but asking them to leave immediately seems more likely.

  • In my most recent experience with being laid off I left immediately. There are some instances where they company does give some notice. Like, we're eliminating your position in 30 days then we'll give you 30 days of severance after that. But for the most part it's usually an immediate thing.

  • No idea. I would get the eff outta there as soon as possible, though.
  • They usually wait until the end of the day to tell someone they've been laid off.  I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting any notice here.  The restaurant I used to work at left me a voicemail saying the next day would be my last day.  That manager was a douche, though.

H's company doesn't fire people very often, but they do drive them to quit pretty frequently.

  • It depends. Most places give you til the end of the day (or the next morning if they tell you at the end of the working day), but some companies will give you notice so you can get your affairs in order and sometimes they'll even help you find a new job (if the laying off was amiable and purely business based).
  • Being fired is different from being laid off in my mind.  Fired=bad, laid off=sucks, but not caused by something negative that you did.

The companies I work for now have never laid anyone off (Law firm with one lawyer and two paralegals, Jewelry line with the designer, me, and two brand spanking new administrative folks, and Princess Party Company.  She's fired princesses, but never laid any off)

    Im quoting you. HAH!

And yeah, H said giving the people at his company notice was kind of pointless because then they had no motivation to actually do any work for the remainder of their time there.

Nope. And they'll fire any time of day. You just get a check that contains the remainder of how much you worked during that pay period.
  • My company pretty much treats being fired and laid off the same way. You just might have a higher chance of getting a good recommendation if you're laid off.
  • My company had a massive re-org back in October 2010.  There are still people with the company who have a severance package waiting for them.  In this instance they knew it needed to be a gradual transition; they were selling off assets and were doing everything they could to find all the to-be severed employees new positions either with the new owners or elsewhere in the much larger corporation.  Some of our severed central-function employees have been extended several times.  Others took the severance right away and have already come back as contractors.  Like LittleMissCutie said, in this instance it was very clearly purely business-related.

When someone gets fired, on the other hand, they are asked to leave right then and there.

This is why. They also usually send someone (from HR) to watch you clean out your desk.

Also, they want a chance to get your last paycheck/vacation time together, and if they let you stay, it won't accurately reflect time worked.

We get paid on the 15th and the last day of the month, but our first pay period ends on the 10th and the second ends on the 25th. So it's not like your paycheck is even all of your pay right up until the minute they give it to you. They'd still have to cover the remainder.

  • All the times I've been laid off (I work in a high turnover industry) I've been cut at any point in the day, and left immediately after saying my goodbyes. Usually they pay me through the end of the week. I have worked places where they send the security person to watch you pack up your stuff, turned off your email access, and escorted you out of the building. That's always fun.

  • The magazine I used to work for had a large sweep of lay-offs (of which I was included) in the Spring of 09...I was told in the morning, no notice, was immediately swept up into HR to go over a few details, and left for the day. They mailed me my things I couldn't carry home that day. In my current job (lab/research) there have been no lay-offs or firings.
