I have zero interest in petting that bearcat. LDY - step 1 - get divorced. I judge my brothers... I asked them both to look at houses with me today so I wouldn't have to meet random internet landlords alone and one of them made a dentist appointment and one of them made plans to go out after work.  So now I'm annoyed.  And freaked out about being made a skinsuit.  The landlord I'm meeting this afternoon is a woman so I'm better about that but the one for later is a guy. <strong> Maybe I'll take my 90 lb dog with me.</strong>
Posted by Loopyseven
<div>That's what I'd do. You know, if I could ever convince H to let me get a dog. Stupid husband being all sensible and wanting a house first.</div>
• Yeah take your dog! She'll want to see and get a feel for the house too.

I'm so weird.
• Any, I told DH that I wanted a house before a dog.  Then it became after we pass the professional engineering exam (since we can't afford a house in Boston).  And somehow I got tricked into getting a dog after we took the exam.  Thank goodness we passed!

I do wish that we had a yard for the dog.  But I wouldn't trade her back for anything.

<div>I wouldn't.  Even landlords who are willing to take large dogs might decide to find something wrong with your application when faced with the reality of a 90 lb dog.  It sucks but I'd be worried about it.</div><div>

<div>Yeah, now would be a bad time to get a dog, since I'm starting school soon, our cat is a diva and our apartment is pretty small, but we have a virtual bulletin board for work and someone was selling these adorable GS puppies. I almost died.</div>

<div>Seriously. Tiny birds are okay, since they're so skittish, but even then I had one fly into my face while I was out on a bike ride once. Big birds though...we had these two Canadian geese who love to stay in our pond during the summer, I wandered a little too close one year and they chased me all the way up to the house. My mom laughed her ass off though. Every summer after that, I saw them. Waiting. Watching.</div>

<div>I knooow. They had the black and tan pups, and the all black ones. I couldn't decide which I'd rather have. Clearly the answer is both.</div>
• My last roommate made the stupid mistake of trying to leave the apartment while the baby geeese were on parade. She was chased by the adults, scratched, and terrified. She ran back to the apartment (her car was closer--I told you she's stupid), where the geese trapped her. They sat at the bottom of the stairs and started making these god-awful noises whenever she got near them.
• Ben was attacked by a goose when he was young, too.  Lol - on a golf course.

I was attacked by bees, I think I may have rather been attacked by a goose.

<div>Rofl. Reminds me of this awful rooster we had on the farm for a while. He'd wait til you came down to feed the hens, sneak up behind you, flap onto your back and dig his talons into you while pecking the crap out of you. He once chased my step brother into the cabin, and sat on the porch waiting for him to come out. For two hours.</div>
• Yeah.. And though the properties are pet friendly, I'm not sure they want random dogs walking through at a showing :).  I'll probably call H and give him license plate numbers and have the phone out as I meet the agent and walk through.  H initiated the contact so he started out dealing with a guy, not just with me.  Unfortunately, H had to go to Wyoming for work so he had to leave yesterday morning and I didn't get into town until Sunday night so we didn't really have much time to look at places together.
• AATB, my brother was attacked by bees.  We were playing in the woods and walking over this log when he started screaming.  I looked at him, and he had bees all over!  We ran home, and he still had a few crawling on him, by the time we got there.  I think he was stung about 8 times.  Needless to say, he's not very fond of bees.

Ugh.  I hate all birds, especially geese.  They are just so aggressive and territorial.  All these stories are making me shudder.

• Birds larger than like a chickadee or cardinal scare the ever living shiit out of me.  I think it has something to do with the scaly skin they have on their feet and the fact that bird poop is horrendous.

I remember reading one time that birds are the closest living relatives of dinosaurs or something (as evidence by their scaly skin) and have forever been afraid.
Also, they can be really agressive.

Special, the last time I went to the Cincinnati Zoo, they had peacocks roaming freely in one area.  We had to walk past them to get to the part of the zoo we were trying to visit.  I think I ran through there faster than I've ever had before.  They squaked at me and it only made me run faster.
In Response to Re: I judge : 4 bedrooms for 50k?  I'd move to cleveland if the idea of being next door neighbors with a browns fan didn't make my skin crawl;-) We are in the process of closing on a house- $260,000 for 4br 3.5 br.  <strong>Monthly property taxes are half as much as our current rent.</strong> There were only 2 foreclosures on the market in the area (a Pittsburgh suburb) we were looking and they are priced very high (both are "mini-mansions")  The home turn over rate right now here is about 30 days.
Posted by laurenlizzyb
Exactly.  Now imagine you had the money to buy that house outright, so that all you had to pay was the property taxes?  Same income, lower living expenses.  The mortgage for the house we're looking at would come to a little under half of what we're paying in rent when you factor in the monthly property taxes and home owners insurance.  We plan to take the other half that would have normally gone towards rent and use that to pay off the mortgage faster.  Since the loan is only for around $20K (we have an awesome downpayent too) so that we can make improvements, with us putting our income taxe refunds towards the principle as well, it shouldn't take us long to pay off the house.   And laurenlizztb, you're welcome in our neighborhood anytime!

I agree with the PP who said that home ownership isn't for everyone, but if someone gets $250K in free money, seems like they could at least get themselves out of the projects, IJS.  No matter how nice you fix up the inside of a house, you're still in the projects with roaches, crackheads and everything else that goes with living in the hood.

</div><div>Something similar happened to my brother.  We were vacationing at a cabin in New Hampshire that belonged to a friend of my mom's.  Brother went out to chop some firewood and stumbled on a nest of ground hornets.  I was really little so I don't remember much of the ordeal.  Brother will flinch at any flying insect near his head.  A fly once made him flinch and fall off a stool while he was manning a spotlight at a theater show.  He landed on the stool and cracked three ribs.  Though the spotlight only dipped for a second so the audience didn't think anything of it.
