Crazy things people pay for

This was inspired by Dani's flame about me talking about (possibly, probably not) trying to sell some poms on etsy. What's some stuff you've seen that you can't believe people pay for?

This etsy seller below is NOT me, to be clear. $100 a pom, and her store is quite popular... Ridiculous. I was thinking maybe $5 each. They cost about $3 each to make and take about an hour.

What else?

Re: Crazy things people pay for

  • Dang!
Um, T's sisters $600 coffee table seems excessive to me.
  • That ball of coffee filters is the most ridiculously overpriced thing I think I've ever seen.

  • The thing that I do that I hate to pay for is my hair... I get a small amount of highlights and a trim and feel like I give her half my paycheck!
    image
  • I guess "ridiculously overpriced" is always relative though. But even if I could afford to wipe my ass with Benjamins, that doesn't mean I'd do it.

  • My friend's fiance paid $700 for a professional resume.  And he has had the same job for the last 7 years, and before that just college.  And she told me that was a good deal, that many people pay $2000.

    Huh?????

My resume is DIY and I have landed some sweet jobs.

  • Wow, I did my resume and people are always interested. It was free

I understnad maybe the coffee table price in normal but to me, it seems insane.

Damn. FI paid someone $150 to revamp his resume, and I thought that was kind of silly. Until he got a job that came with a hefty raise. But still, spending $2000 just to <em>get</em> a job doesn't sit well with me.

  • Lauren, I agree. I mean, I'm sure that designer clothes (like right off the runway) have a similar % markup, but I was shocked. I'd seen someone selling just the dyed filters in a stack for $5 (??), but yeah... No.
  • I think it all is perspective... I pay a lot of money for football game season tickets for my huskies and my seahawks without a second thought. I find it too expensive to buy designer clothes and get facials and massages and I don't really understand the point of owning more than 1 or 2 pairs of dress shoes... I think it is all what we find important to spend money on. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. It is just what each person deems important

I agree with you-to a point. A ball of dyed coffee filters for $100? I think that's universally ridiculous, no matter how much money you have. I would sincerely like to meet one of the people that buys these things.

You read my mind. We all have indulgences, and that's all fine and dandy. But a $2000 resume re-vamp or a $100 pom (or $150 coffee filter bouquet!) are a different story.
  • Yeah... That is true - that person has apparently found enough suckers to make a business though. I would say people like me with no DIY skills but that is ridiculous expensive... I never would even think to pay to revamp a resume! I took a class in college for that - maybe I could start charging? Smile

P.S. good thing I thought to spell check... after a few glasses of wine I just spelled business with about 5 s's!

  • Roxy...you look super super cute in that pic.  Love the shoes and dress.

Poli...where I used to work...the shoes were only a 50% markup.  Which means when we sold them on sale, at half off, and the store paid overhead and our 10% commission they would lose money.  Kind of crazy.

  • And I totally agree about the spending a lot on what is important.

When my husband and I started dating I had a 10 year old floor model tiny tube TV, because I used to never watch TV.  But then he was with me and I bought $900 Alexander McQueen shoes.

But some people will spend that much on things like tons of video games, or wheels for their car, or computer equipment, or sporting goods or golf or personal trainers.  I would never.

at the resort for a mere $400 you can get 2 beach chairs under a canopy, some Figi water, 2 drinks of the day and a personal butler to get you anything else you want (extra items are additional cost of course).   They are sold out all the time.

eta - I should add that only a few feet away are 'free' beach chairs that have canopies attached, you can walk over to a stand and pour yourself a glass of water  from a water cooler and attendants are walking around taking drink and food orders.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

[QUOTE]I c<strong>an't imagine spending a lot on purses.</strong> Don't get me wrong, many of them are lovely, but I have a $50 limit on handbags. I will, however, spend $40 on a bar at Victoria's Secret, which my mother finds completely ridiculous. I also spare no expense (almost) when it comes to my dogs. I will also pay a lot for good furniture. Like therickson - good to see you back, LTNS - it's about what's important to you. If DH paid money for his tattoos, it'd be excessive. Thankfully, he usually pays in trade. That and our tattoo artist is a good friend and rarely charges.

That's what I was going to say.  I can't imagine buying Coach or LV, or other high priced designer bags. Some of them are pretty, but I can find nice looking bags for way less.  Overall, I usually don't spend more than $100. Right after Christmas,  I did pay around $125 for a bag, but I had a gift certificate.<div>
</div><div>The coffee filter thing is pretty, but it looks like it's worth about $10-15.  </div>
  • I wanted to have a little bit of a tan for my bridal portraits next weekend so I did the Mystic Tan.  They had a special that was buy 5, get one free.  I asked how much it was and they said $80.  I just couldn't justify spending that much money for something that doesn't last very long.  I was hesitant to spend the money for just the one time but I know I won't have much time to lay out this week.
