40th birthday party vs. trip gift

Ladies,
I posted on here recently about the invitations for a 40th birthday bash that I want to throw for my BF.  Well, this weekend I had mani/pedis with another girlfriend and her vote was for a small local party (read:  inexpensive-I can easily rent the club room in our building, bring in some food from a local restaurant and stock up with Bev-Mo specials for a simple party) but give him a fantastic trip somewhere.  It wasn't hard to find out last night that he wants to go to France next if given a choice.  Lame-we were assuming he would be all over India or Machu Picchu.

My friend thinks that there is always a bunch of build up to a big party and then it is kind of a let down.  I have heard some of the married women on here say something similar about their weddings.  I.e. I loved my wedding but wished I spent the money on something else.  It was a lot for "just one day."

Anyway, what are your thoughts on a big blowout bash vs. a trip somewhere?  Do you agree that the surprise party is always bigger and greater in the mind of the planner?  I know that he would be happy either way and I am beginning to think if it was me, I'd rather have a trip.  However, it feels like an easy way out of planning a big party.  Thoughts?

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.
