White tie is as formal as it comes.

First, I would try to determine if they're truly having a white tie wedding.  Check out the venue, etc.  What time is the ceremony? 

If all signs point to formal, unfortunately a tux and evening dress is going to be the way to go.

In this country,, White tie is acceptable dress only for debutante balls and state affairs.

, Obama gets to wear one but no one at your wedding does, not even Prince Charming.

OOT, it's incredibly common for Mardi Gras balls with the older and most historic krewes to do white tie and tails events.  You can't get in with a regular tux.  Just throwing that out there.  They're a big deal down here.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions.... I didn't get to read the OP (obviously).  But they do have a lot of white tie things down here so I just wanted to toss that out there in case OP was wondering if it was okay to have a white tie wedding or something.

My post was actually more directed at OOT!  But either way, it's awfully hard NOT to jump to conclusions when the post is randomly deleted for no reason after one response ;)

sorry, I apparently caused quite an uproar.....

I only deleted the post because if you scan through my posts, and know me in real life (off the knot) it's not difficult to figure out who I am. As my friend may also frequent the knot, I didn't want to offend. 

Anyway, sorry for causing a cyber storm
