Plus Ones

My FI and I are paying for the whole wedding ourselves.
We were discussing the option of perhaps not allowing single guests to bring plus-ones in order to cut costs.
(People who are in long-term or serious relationships but not married would be allowed to bring their significant other, just to prevent from having guests we aren't familiar with there.)
Just wanted to know what the etiquette for this situation was.

Re: Plus Ones

  • The thing is, you can't really decide who is in a serious relationship based on time. There are people on here who were serious in 3 weeks.  If they consider themselves in a relationship that person needs to be invited. If they are truly single, then they can be invited without a plu one.

  • Thanks! Thats what I meant, just didnt word it properly!
  • Yeah, as long as they're not in a relationship, they don't need to be invited with a random plus one.

Agree with the others.  One thing you might consider, though, is to plan your budgeting and guest list in pairs.  A truly single friend now might have a SO by the time you're ready to send out invitations. We see this all the time on here where a bride comes on and says "What do I do?  I don't have space or money for this new person!"  Not every single friend is going to have this happen but you should really consider having some money set aside in the budget and space at your venue to add a few extra people in at the 6-8 week mark.  If all of your singles stay singles then you have some extra money to use for something else.

ETA: and now that I've seen your wedding is in Nov 2014, you should definitely assume that there will be SOs by then.  And...I know you didn't ask this but a word of caution.  SInce you have 2 years until the wedding, be very careful about discussing wedding details with people outside of the family and implying that people might be invited.  Relationships can change and you don't need to solidify your specific guest list for awhile, just your person capacity.  If you're going to do STDs, you might only send them to the OOT guests.  Anyone who receives an STD needs to receive an invitation.  If you have to make cuts after the STDs go out, you can only cut people who didn't receive them.  We see posts all the time on that (friendship changed so do I have to invite this person), too.

I'm glad to hear that you don't think people are "abusing" you here.
