Do you use Pandora?

I've been listening to Pandora for the last couple of days and I feel like they just keep playing me the same artists.  I need ideas of how to widen my playlists.

I have a Brandi Carlile station, and it plays her and then basically just plays two or three other women over and over.  I added Adele and that helped but not enough.

I have a Jason Mraz station and it just plays him and John Mayer.  I added DMB to that one to see if I get a little more variety.

What stations do you have?

  • I've been listening to a lot of hip hop, as of late.  I use Pandora too.  The best station I've found so far is Outkast.  But it doesn't sound like that's your thing.  My favorite alt rock station is Pearl Jam.  I don't have a variety problem with Pandora, it usually does a really good job of picking music I like.

  • ZOMG I LOVE PANDORA!!!

I started mine with Ben Folds, but then you can add artists you like to the same station.

I think I added Ben folds, oasis, Pete Yorn, Peter paul and mary, and then as other artists or songs came up that I like, I made sure to thumbs up or thumbs down it.

I think I have perfected my radio station. It's freakin' awesome.

  • heh, I have weird ones. my fave is the little river band station, which plays 70s soft rock. right now it's playing "take it to the limit" by the eagles.
I also have pink floyd, billy joel, CCR, and dire straits stations.
  • I used to.  I can't now.  Anti-Canadian basterds.

  • See, I think I need to just keep adding variety.  I just added Ben Folds to my Jason Mraz/DMB station.

I do like Outkast lauren, but maybe not to listen to while I'm working.

  • Maybe add Duffy,  Corinne Bailey Rae, John Mayer or  Joss Stone.

I will also add a little Jill Scott or Erykah Badu which will lead me to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday...
  • I added Brett Dennen and Xavier Rudd, too. And others if they came up consistently and I liked their stuff, I would add them. It brings a nice variety.

  • Okay cool, looks like the key is adding people.  There is one chick that plays on my Brandi station, Rachael Yamagata, and I really like her.

  • I'm always dilligent about using the thumbs up button.  The more info you give Pandora, the better it'll pick your music.

  • Make sure you're thumbs upping or downing enough songs too, that seems to help.
  • I wish I could carry my almost perfected station with me everywhere. IT's just that awesome.

  • I haven't had much luck with creating my own stations.  I like the classic rock station best, and today I listened to Christmas classics some.
  • Oh, i love 'em. If you like easy listening kind of stuff, I'd definitely recommend them.

  • I use pandora too, but I don't like the 40 hours a month limit (unless you become a member)

I have a lot of stations: Elvis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, the Andrew Sisters, AC/DC, Safetysuit...

I can't remember them all hahaha.

The thumbs up and down do help narrowing down your selection of what you really want and like.

There is also slacker.com its the same as pandora, minus the 40 hour limit.
  • how the hell do you add people to your stations?
  • 40 hours a month?  Weird.

Okay fische I'll check them out.

Also, Heels you just clued me into the genre stations.  I didn't even realize those were available.

Underneath the name of your station, it says Add variety...

You click that, type in the name and it puts in that station.

  • Yeah, I don't like switching between stations, so I just have the one. I have some country that comes up, a little pop music, folk music, Jimmy Buffett...it's seriously perfect. ;)

Ingrid Michaelson comes up a lot, too. I like her. And Death Cab for Cutie.

  • I'm listening to Brett Dennen right  now, I Will Love You the Most.  I like it!  I love discovering new people, that's one of the reasons I like Pandora so much.  Thanks fische!

Yeah, I had almost given up on Pandora until I found the genre stations.
  • I paid my 30 bucks for the year for Pandora. I have it on CONSTANTLY at work, so I burn through 40 hours right quick.

  • I usually only listen to music at work if I'm having a rough week or one of those just "leave me alone" weeks, but this week I've mastered the headphone in one ear but not in the other and that's been pretty great.  I can listen to music but still have one ear open and available if someone walks into my cubicle and wants to talk or needs something.
