what car to buy?

my heart wants this:

but part of my head (as well as my husband) thinks i should go this route, particularly with a 2nd dog on the way:

Re: what car to buy?

  • If it's just you and your DH and you're getting a 2nd dog, there should be ample space if you put the backseat down in the Mini, unless you have great danes or something.

I don't personally like the 2nd car, so I'd go for the first.
  • Mini Cooper baby!!!! That's what I drive and I LOVE it:)
  • Mileage? Commute time? How big is Rufus' brother/sister going to be? Reliability ratings?
  • I love the subaru! but I am bias.. because I have always loved subarus... and I live in maine with lots of snow... If I got in a car accident with the first car I would have major injuries.

Could a subaru sedan or impreza(hatchback not wagon) be a choice ?

  • #1! And Mini sells a slightly bigger version of the Mini...the Clubman maybe?
  • Mini all the way!!

(I've heard Mini's have a lot of room---perhaps that helps sway the decision)

  • h has a crv, so my initial thinking was that he has the roomy car so i should be able to get a little fun car without too much issue. h's response: "we're getting a 2nd dog and you want to get a smaller car??" he's riding me hard about getting something more practical. and i'm kind of wavering on whether he has a point.

doggie number 2 is about the same size as rufus (50-55 lbs).

do the back seats of a cooper convertible fold down?
  • also, i don't want a sedan. i'm not a middle-of-the-road kinda gal. i'm also not crazy about the look of the clubman.
  • You know I love a good cooper!!! NUMBER ONE ALL THE WAY!

  • I would only imagine that two 50-60 lbs dogs would fit comfortably in the backseat of the mini, curled up into little doggy-balls.

I say if 50-60lbs humans could fit in the backseat, so can dogs!

  • I would say subaru, but because they are more reliable. I don't like the look of a hatchback, but reliability wins over looks, IMO.

  • I would go for the cooper.  But I am partial I drive a BMW.
That being said, they are both great cars you can not go wrong with either.
  • I'd go with your heart on this one.
  • A lady at my job has 2 dogs, both are rather large (60-80 pounds).  She has no problems transporting them in her Mini.  Everyone that I know who owns one, absolutely loves them.
  • We looked at a mini but with Ringo (the 65 lbs husky) we had to stick with our Subaru.  You can fold the seats down in a Mini, but then you have no space for storage or other people.  The Subaru is perfect for us when we go camping or take Ringo on a road trip.  But we are a one car family, so we do not have another option.  If we did have two cars, I think we would want to the dog(s) to fit in both easily.

The Subaru ( The "Ru") is going strong at 170,000 miles right now.  DH recently decided that it will last to 500,000 miles.  We will see about that.
  • My FI's dream car is a suburu, but I'm with you - I'd love a cute little convertible. FI does a lot of camping and hiking and he just wants something that's small, but tough, and likes the AWD.

Though honestly, my next car will probably be a Volkswagen or a Volvo.
