Help me name my blog

I'm writing a blog about my trials and let downs and successes in working as a theater arts literacy teacher in a large city here in CT.

It's rough. I had the worst day ever teaching them on Tuesday, day two of 25 for this program. But I am making HUGE progress. I almost cried with how well we did today. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster is an understatement.

When the program ends, I will still keep it up with other theater classroom experiences, what works and what doesn't. Funny stuff my kids say. The usual.

So, help!

Re: Help me name my blog

  • I suck at naming blogs, but I just wanted to say that you need to be super careful.  Of course, you probably already really know this, but if you're going to blog about any actual situations, I would not make public the name of your blog.  Teachers get fired for that stuff.  At least around here.

I was going to say this. It seems like there's a story in the news every other week about this, and many of the situations I've felt the educator did nothing egregious.
  • Thats what I was thinking.

I will keep it private, for myself and family and close friends. No public links. It's more a vent and to keep myself writing.

I refere to the school as "the public city school" and my name is "Ms. McGee" which is nothing like my real first or last name haha. And all the kids are referred to as J, or A or whatever.

Thanks for looking out for me, and for some suggestions.

Posted by MyUserName1 Well, not technically, grammatically speaking, at least not as an improper noun. But many theaters where theatre happens have the word "theatre" with the re in their name. So then it's proper to refer to it as "the theatre" as a shortened form of "the George Kernodle Theatre". ETA; at least in the U.S.

  • I like Acting Out and Speaking Up or Scene it All.

Also, it drives me crazy when anyone spelles theatre with an -er.  It's the first thing I teach my students.

Nicki, what are you teaching in this class?  I'm wondering if there's anything I can steal from you, curriculum wise.
  • Sorry took so long, I was in the other universe for a bit. I am teaching Antigone. I will gladly forward you the curriculum if you want to steal! I do a lot of behavioral management/intervention. I like all the ideas. Scene it All is my favorite! As far as re and er go, I find them interchangeable. But that could be rather incorrect. I was taught ER for American, RE British. For example, the City Youth Theater is the company I work for, here in CT. But I will gladly look into it, to inform myself. You all rock, thanks again!

  • So Theatre Arts Literacy is basically reading a play?
  • It's not just reading a play. We have five weeks, 90 minutes a day. Week one is Building Community. Week two is Entering text- so learning themes. Week three we read the play. Week four is create our own text: monologues, scene readings, etc. Week five is rehearse and perform. It's called the Performance Cycle and is a new concept coming from Brown University. I like it, but it is very new to me. The lesson plans are already made out, and very detailed. I just find it difficult to keep my 7th graders focused, on task, and being respectful. So everyday we are starting with a group discussion about the arts in schools or arts related current events to wake up their brains and get them talking and reading out loud.

Sounds very cool! I'm going to look this up, I can always use more ideas to veered up the literacy side of my units.
