Time between family weddings?

Nephew proposed to his gf the week after my FI proposed to me, and we've both been planning for summer of 2011.  They tell me yesterday they have decided on 6/11/11... same date I've been working for.  Grrrr.

This is a 2nd wedding for both my FI and I, but I didn't get to do the the "right way" the first time around.  So this is my BIG wedding.  I really want my family to be there, it's important to me.  Also, in order to have both sets of kids there, it has to be in the month of June or July (custody issues - the other dates we have them all is over Spring Break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

What is the customary or acceptable time frame for me to look at for my wedding?  We're in completely different states, and most of my guests will be traveling here.  I'm debating between 6/25/11 and 7/16/11.  June weather is the BEST here, and July can be tricky - but June is awfully close to their date.

Just trying to keep the peace, even though they have never cared much about what other people think about their plans (in regards to anything - not just this wedding)

Re: Time between family weddings?

  • Honestly, I'd try to do 2 weeks.
    Where in AK are you?
  • NDA - Palmer, AK which is near Anchorage, looking at venues near Seward and Whittier
  • Haha I'm from Anchorage. Very cool!

Oh very cool!  There is a new hotel (new depending on when you left), The Inn at Whittier that we are very interested in.  Driving down to see it next weekend :)

How long were you in ANC?
  • I left in 2007. Well, because its Alaska and its so expensive to get in and out of. I definitely think its a good idea to give a good bit of time for people to recover between the 2 weedings especially since theirs is not in AK
  • I was born in Fairbanks raised in Anchorage until I moved away in 2007 when I was 20
  • Ohhh FB.  I was thinking of having the wedding at the hot springs but heard it's super warm up there in the summer time.  I just moved here in Feb '09, so I haven't made my way up to FB yet.  It's on my list though!
  • Oh wow. You're new to Ak!
Fairbanks is....well, small andkind of lame haha.
Summit lake lodge is gorgeous (down south)
  • Small and lame... hmmm... have you BEEN to Whittier?  HA!  It would definately be a "just going there for the wedding" thing.  Summit Lake, off to check that one out!
  • Well, whittier is at least supposed to be small and its pretty there. I don't know, I feel like Fbanks doesn't have a lot to offer.
  • Just make it easier on everyone else, I'd try to give as much time as possible between weddings.

That being said, is there a way you can confirm the date with your nephew that they chose?  It'd kinda suck if they're just screwing around and don't really have a definite idea of anything... KWIM?

I know when we were planning, we went from November, to September and settled on October because of the Church, football season (yeah, I'm not kidding), and the venue availability.

We're having our wedding on a Friday, because of BC football games. Yeah, I totally get you on the "planning around football season" thing. Crazies.

I would give as much time as possible between the wedding, but they do only get ONE day.

  • What did you say when your nephew mentioned that? Do they have a venue/deposit on something yet? I feel whoever gets the venue booked first is fine, the other will have to work around it.

Are most of the guests local to your nephew? If so, I wouldn't worry too much, and I think 2 weeks is fine, but a month is better.
