I am in PA right now for my shower this past weekend, and while some people shipped gifts to my house and some gave gift cards, there were quite a few larger gifts. Buddy and I planned to cobble together some combination of shipping small items and returning and rebuying some items on the other end. My sister, in fact, intended that to happen when she gave me a large kitchen electric product.
However, due to general expensiveness and a current 1% increase in sales tax, the difference between PA & AZ is pretty huge.
Anyway, my aunt had told me that when she went to buy my dinnerware, she was intending on shipping it herself, but Macy's offered to do it for her.
I took a lot of my bigger items (6 things) back to Macy's and asked to return them to my registry and rebuy to get the free shipping and it worked almost perfectly. If you find yourself away from home with many big gifts from Macy's (maybe other places, but I just did Macy's), they were GREAT about this. I talked to MULTIPLE people before even attempting it, to make sure it was allowed, and no one even blinked.
Stuff to keep in mind if you try it:
1. Discrepancies between current sales prices and prices when the items were bought. I'm a bit confused as to how it all worked out for me - overall, I ended up coming up about $16 short, but I bought and shipped almost $400 worth of stuff. I wasn't going to complain. I think that was just due to confusion on the process, but plan for that.
2. Shipping items you purchased IN A MACY'S STORE is not free. They offer a registry service at the cash counters. Instead of purchasing the item in the store and asking them to ship it, they order it from the warehouse for you and it goes right to the registrant. This is depending on the item being in stock in the warehouse, but a quick glance at your registry can tell you that. Doing it this way, if your purchase is over $50, gets you free shipping.
Okay, I know this was long, but it saved my butt, so keep this possibility in mind if you live in one state and your shower is in another.
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.
