Where did all the English teachers go?

Is it just me or are people getting extremely lazy with spelling? case in point:

" Thanx 4 all da responses thus far. I thought sumhow not offering any wud be rude but i guess not huh :-) "

I'm not trying to rag on this poster or anything, and I'm all about using abbreviations but I can't take her seriously and can't help but wonder if she's still in HS.

That is bad. We also have some very ignorant posters today apparently...

Mexico is a MESS.  Corrupt gov., drugs, violence, etc.
We would not go to Mexico if you paid us.
Why does anyone give their hard earned money to support this corrupt country?  Yes there are nice places in Mexico and Afghanitan but I see no reason to support them.
Turn off the tourism $$ and maybe they will step up to the plate instead of trying to hide crime stat's under the rug.  If you think you are safe any where within the boarders of Mexico I have a bridge to sell you.

I wouldn't say this is a grammatical error, just really *IMO* annoying shorthand. If it was pepole instead of people than yes I would agree. haha I use that example because for years my little brother used to spell it that way (pepole) until T9 on his phone kept correcting him, sad but true.

I won't critique spelling, but that post was just horrible.  Thats text lingo gone way too far, and its just wrong.  I hate even getting texts like that.

I can kind of understand when people do that it texts, because some phones only give you a certain number of characters to say what you need to say. That doesn't mean it annoys me any less though.

I agree that with texts its fine. Is it necessary when posting though? Even if your in a hurry how hard is it to type out "the"?

I die a little on the inside when people write/type like this outside  of text messaging. I used to do this back in like, 7th grade. I made myself get into the habit of typing out everything properly so I could whip off essays in 20 minutes.

I know the feeling! I heard FI's father say "rooned" and I pointed my finger at him and yelled "YOUUUUUU!!!!" it was a bit dramatic I'll admit but I finally found out where he got it from.

I refuse to text like that.  I'll break it into 2 texts before spelling like that.  The most I'll do is write prob instead of probably.  No joke, it took me about 2 months to figure out why people kept texting me about someone named Tom, until I finally realized that it meant tomorrow.

I hate text speak, and if you teach in a high school or middle school you will see the problem of technology with it.  Just like when spell check became so popular people totally forgot how to spell when writing, kids now write their essays and test answers in text speak and think its perfectly fine.  I would never give them credit if their answers were in text speak, and my kids used to tell me to "get with the times."  No, learn proper English.

I'm an English teacher, but I'm with Ali on this one.  It's annoying, but I don't make it a point  to critique grammar here. 

I do get stabby over mute/moot (which apparently is the same word to a lot of people), then/than, made up words (irregardless), and urks/irks (which keeps popping up).

It doesn't save time.

It doesn't bother me so much when you have limited space, though, like in text messages or Twitter.

I am actually concerned for the future of the English language when you think of how many people really don't know how to spell simple words or the differences between they're/there/their.

I must express how happy this thread has made me.  It's lovely to be around other ladies who don't hold the belief that abbreviations (or as I like to joke, "aberrations") from text messaging are appropriate in other written forums, such as essays, letters or tests.  I usually feel like the odd duck out.

You brought up issues with writing--that's an issue I have with people's writing.  I didn't say you specifically.  I said people don't realize that they are two different words.
