Tipping question

In one of the bridal magazines there was guide on tipping.  It said that if your hairstylist/makeup artist comes to you then you don't need to tip, but if you go to them then you do.  Does that sound correct?

My hairstylist/makeup artist is coming to me, but I would feel horrible not tipping.  Ultimately, I could still tip even if that wasn't "the rule".  Wanted to know what you ladies thought?

I think the rule is that if they own their own business a tip isn't required.  For hairstylists, the idea is that if they work in a salon, most of the money goes to the salon and not the stylist, so tipping is appropriate.  But if they own their own business and come to you, then they are being paid directly, tip not necessary. 

However, if you want to tip them, by all means do it!  They will appreciate it.
