Re: The Night Thread

  • I love that dress Aryn! I am trying to make a BM dress for my friends wedding so I don't have to pay 200 for what I can make for 40. I love chiffon, it just mAkes me look KU. That style would not plus it has pockets!

  • So I think I'm in the complete minority in the adoption fundraiser thread.  If I had a friend who desperately wanted to adopt, I would be happy to contribute.  I mean, I've supported people in countless walks for March of Dimes, Susan G Koman, animal walks, why is this any different?  Just cause it's a cause that benefits one individual family? I've gone to plently of fundraisiers benefiting one person.
Anyway, just my thoughts. Not trying to start a debate just didn't want to post in a dead thread.

  • Isn't it adorable! It's going to be in garnet red.

I think the main reason I tried this one on today is because I never loved the first dress. I mostly got it because my mom and FMIL teared up when they saw it. I always wondered if I had gone to this store and tried this one on if it would be THE dress. And it was. My BM that has seen me in both dresses agreed it's more me. The one I have now is very princessy.

Also, great find on your part! I never would have guessed your dress was only 325 from the pictures!

  • KJB, I know a few families that did various fundraising things to be able to afford to adopt. I never would think to side-eye that. Adoption is expensive. A couple of them did raffle type things with really cute gift baskets as the prize. I honestly thought it was a cute idea.
  • H and I might adopt, and if we do, we would go the foster to adopt route. It seems a bit more stressful, but cheaper. Oh KJB, I would gladly take part in the movie TK Eeners Present: Sisterhood of the Traveling Bridesmaid Dress!

Hahaha that's exactly what we called it!
  • I mean, this is my thought process:
H and I make a decent amount of money.  Plenty to pay our bills and such.  We've actually discussed international adoption.  There is no way we'd be able to afford it.  I wouldn't pursue a fundraiser if we chose to go that route, but who has 30K sitting at their disposal?  Not many people.
Could we afford to raise a kid?  Yep.  My insurance would assist a bit in adoption costs, but still, we'd end up paying a ton of cash.  We just don't have that, so it's really not an option for us.
I'm gonna stop there cause I could talk about this forever.  And apparently, most people don't share my opinion.

  • FI and I will probably adopt eventually as well. I originally wanted a child from Haiti (don't know why) but we'd have to be married for 10 years before we could even start the process with their agencies and FI feels he would be too old at that point to take on another child.

I think the foster to adopt route could be a good option. I also have a special place in my heart for special needs children so FI has agreed upon a few ailments he think he could handle and we may eventually adopt one of the Rainbow Kids.
  • We've looked into (not in depth) adopting from Russia or eastern Europe.  We actaully haven't discussed it for a couple years, so I'm not sure where we are on this.

  • Yeah, my dress was originally $1800 but I got it on consignment so that is why it was so cheap. It was never worn though, tags still on it since it was a sample gown from a previous bridal shop.

Garnet red will look great with that dress! What are your colors, aside from red?

  • This is what we were looking at:
    cut and dry:  20 grand.
    we don't have 20 grand.
It is something I would like to pursure though.  I should check what my current job adoption assistance is.

  • Talking about babies/kids makes me want a baby in a desperate way. Gah. Silly waiting.

  • MuSu, I think you're like 10 years younger than me :)

  • Our colors are red, ivory, browns and a tiffany blue accent (mostly just flowers, the pavillion is blue) A lot of it is textured stuff though with burlap, lace and wood accents.

I always want a baby in a desperate way. It doesn't help that I babysit the most adorable 18 month old girl. Every time I come home I tell FI how I can't wait to have a baby.
  • Now I'm looking at this all over again.  Honestly, my biggest fear with adopting a non-infant is my animals.  I think I've read too many books about psycho kids harming animals.  Or wait, those weren't books, that was the news.  I guess if I birthed a kid, same concerns.
    Photobucket
  • Haha, yeah I know i have plenty of time. :) I just think that I want to be a mom more than anything. But I'm also practical and know that I need to wait for a better time in my life for that to happen, haha.

Those are pretty colors, Aryn. I love the sound of lace/wood/burlap combo!

I know what you mean. I am hoping that my future kids become best friends with my pups.

  • I almost think dogs are easier.  My cats?  Holy hell.  One of them is lucifer in cat form.  Luckily, that's the one without front claws :)

I can definitely see that, since dogs are inherently more apt to want to please and depend on people.

My Tressa would be the sweetest dog with a child.  Beefy?  Kids scare the shiit out of him.  We go out for a walk and my 90 pound dog hides behind me when a kid comes up to pe them.
    Photobucket
  • Haha aw poor beefy. I know that Tory and the new pup will just want to play with kids all the time if they were here. When Tory sees kids outside she whines and just wants to lick them to death.

At that's too cute of Tory! Our littlist (sp?) dog needs some work before I would feel comfortable with him being around children. Sasha is great with them though. She even let FIs niece try to ride her, and she squeezed Sasha so hard she yelped but just looked at us like "why are you doing this to me"

ETA: Sasha made the look, not the niece. haha
  • edited April 2012
Aw poor Sasha, haha. I got annoyed with my uncle because he won't let Tory near his kids because my neice is terrified of dogs (because her mom is, so she follows moms lead) and he is afraid that my baby nephew will become allergic. I think it is a horseshit excuse, honestly.

ETA: I totally meant cousins. I view them as a neice and nephew because they are 20+ years younger than me.

  • I agree, that sounds like a lame excuse. It seems to me like the girl could benefit from being around a good dog. There are a lot of dogs in this world and going through life afraid of all of them could put a real damper on every day things like a walk.
  • Well I should probably head to bed. I've been tired for awhile but I like talking about dresses and babies and puppies so I stayed later than I should have. Night ladies!

Exactly. Tory would actually be the perfect dog to get over a fear of them. She is unbelievably friendly and non-aggressive. She would be a little 'in your face' at first, as most labs are, but then she is just super sweet and playful. I know she (cousin) wants to try being around her, but because mom is afraid, she won't do it.

I also just think the allergy excuse is silly. My kids are gonna come into a house with dogs in it from the get go, so I guess they're fucked if that is the perspective you take, haha.
