What do I do with my jalapenos?

My plant is quite....fruitful.  I have about 15 jalapenos that are almost done, and I have no idea what to do with that many jalapenos.

So...any ideas?  Bonus points for recipes.  Extra bonus points if you can tell me how long they'll last/how to make them last longer.

Re: What do I do with my jalapenos?

  • Make a LOT of nachos.

    I don't know, jar them?
  • My cousin makes jelly (jam?  are those two different?) with her extras.  I would have no idea how to go about doing that.

  • I like making salsa.
I use a big can of whole tomatoes, half a yellow onion, 2 jalapenos, garlic power, salt, cumin, and juice of a lime. Blend it up in the food processor and then add in chopped cilantro.

I also like using them in the crock pot while making carnitas, or using them in marinades for steak.

  • Hmm. H makes salsa with them, this mexican restaurant I love uses them in quesadillas, and my favourite place for mac and cheese puts them in it (although I get my mac and cheese without them since it's too hot for me). Yoooou can stuff them with cheese and wrap them with bacon, stuff them in chicken breasts, make that yummy looking cheesey pull apart bread I see on Pintrest a lot, make dips, etc.
  • I make a Pozole soup with pork, green chilies, hominy, and fresh jalapeño. I like the carnitas idea too.
  • If they're big, you can make chile rellenos

If they're small, cut them in half and scoop out the seeds and membrane (wear gloves).  Stuff with a mixutre of cream cheese, grated sharp cheddar, and grated pepper jack.  Wrap in a half slice of bacon and secure it with a toothpick soaked in water. Bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes until melty and the bacon is crispy.  Watch closely.  Put down foil to catch spillover.
  • I think what's holding me back is that I don't like jalapenos, ha.

I'll definitely make salsa when my tomatoes are ripe, but I only use about a half of one per batch.

I don't think I worded my question well.  I know HOW to use jalapenos....I just don't know what to do with such a large quantity all at once.

  • If you have a food processor make jalapenos cilantro humus. Chick peas, deseeded jalapenos, cilantro. Done.

  • Stuffed jalepenos.   Cut off the top and de-seed.  Stuff with cream cheese and a raw shrimp.   Wrap in bacon (I've only had maple bacon but I'm sure regular would be good) put the top back on and hold it all together with a toothpick or two.  Grill for about 20-25 minutes.  You can bake as well, but I'm not sure about temp and time.   YUM.

It is from ATHF. It is a really perverted hilarious episode. H calls me it because my name is Anna and I get called "Anna Banana" all the time.

  • I keep my peppers in the fridge, and they last longer in there than keeping them on the counter. If you plan to use them in cooking soups or sauces, maybe chop them and freeze them in ice cube trays with a bit of water? I know that works with herbs.

  • Sometimes I chop them up and then freeze them. I like to add a handful to soups, stirfrys, and pastas at times. It works out pretty well, and that way you don't have to worry about them going bad. Or, you can set up a small stand and sell them on the roadside. ;)

I like the idea of selling them.  Then I don't have to do anything with them.  Ha!

Oh, I know what Aqua Teen Hunger Force is.  Ha.

  • I'm having the same issue with my plant as well. It wasn't doing so well, then I cut it down, now I have about 6 that are ready, and a few more on the way. I love them, so I'm excited. Now if only my habaneros would grow!

  • Sara, same thing happened with  mine.  It was as good as dead, and somehow I brought it back, and now it is just cranking.

I have a sweet pepper plant that a bird keeps digging up.  It's pissing me off.  I don't know what to do with it.

  • Make salsa base. Can peeled garlic and the chopped up jalopenos and onions(if you want them). It lasts forever, an then , when you have your tomatoes, you can use the base to sr=tart.

[QUOTE]I have the same problem, when I buy them. For some ridiculous reason, our grocery store only sells jalapenos in 6 packs. WTF do I need 6 jalapenos for?

    That is very stupid.

    Zizi, good idea!

  • I planted some bell pepper and scotch bonnet seeds, and those suckers refuse to grow. This is the second planting, some bugs ate the other ones.

  • My dad started me a sweet pepper that doesn't need to be pollinated by bees, so we can bring it inside in the winter and it should continue to give us peppers year round.  apparently the birds love it.  Or fuuuucking hate it.  One of the two.

Jalapeno jelly is the bomb! You can make it plain or raspberry/jalepeno or cranberry/jalapeno. It's awesome with brie or even cream cheese.

    http://www.food.com/recipe/raspberry-jalapeno-jelly-8542

Usually 'jelly' refers to the jellied JUICE of whatever it is you are making your stuff from; 'Jam' is the whole fruit (minus pits or seeds) smushed up and made into a gelatinous mixture.

  • That's awesome J. I wonder if I could find something like that here. Although, I can grow outside almost all year. But I like the idea of homegrown peppers all the time.

That raspberry jalapeno jelly looks good. I'm growing raspberries as well, so I'll have to try that when I get some berries on the plant.
