Officiant Gift

My officiant is charing $300 to officiate our ceremony.  Should I give him a gift as well?

Re: Officiant Gift

  • Is he a vendor, or a clergyperson you have a relationship with? If it's the former, no. If it's the latter, yes.

Many clergy cannot or will not accept gifts, but most will accept a donation to the church.

We gave our minister a nice bottle of wine and made a sizeable donation to the church. She also asked us to get more involved, so we've done so.
  • A gift would be a nice gesture. A donation to the church as well or, you could opt for a nice gift card to dinner if you know him personally.
  • He isn't affiliated with a church.  He has his own business here in DC which mostly caters to gay couples who are planning a destination wedding here.  We've never met and won't until the wedding day.  Is the fee (300 USD) sufficient in this case?  I'd be happy to give a gift if it is customary, but don't want to seem out of place by giving one.  It'd also be awkward to bring as we're meeting for the ceremony on the National Mall.
