The Lovely Bones***SPOILER ALERT***

I just got finished reading The Lovely Bones yesterday and I have to say that I was disappointed in the ending...  Yes, it's great that everyone moved on with their lives.  But I thought they needed closure - especially her father.  I REALLY wanted for George Harvey to be found and charged.  He never paid for his crimes...

Was anyone else disappointed?  Or did you like the ending?

It kind of reminded me of those children's books where you had to "make up your own ending."  I HATED those books.  I always felt they left me hanging :(

Re: The Lovely Bones***SPOILER ALERT***

  • I loved the book but I know what you mean, at least he died (oh my, that sounds awful) but still, I wanted him to be convicted and pay.
I know its lame and cheesy but I honestly loves the books (and movies) where everyone gets married and has babies(I guess that does happen in TLB) and lives happily ever after.
  • I finished it last week and I have to agree with you.  I'm all for the "happy endings."  I was happy George died but it really bothered me that he was never punished for his horrible crimes.  It's almost like there was no justice for her death.  I cried the last 50 pages and I'm not a terribly sensitive person.  I'm not sure if I want to go see the movie or if that will make me more upset.  Have you seen it?

  • I liked it.  Do I wish he would have been caught, yes?   I am just glad that they figured it out and knew.  The worst is not knowing.

  • The movie is meh. The book is much better. The movie is just too fantasy for me. I don't know..I was expecting more.
  • PsyDet - I've not seen the movie, but I still think I'd like to.

Mandy - I agree that they can take solace in at least KNOWING he did it.  I would have been even more disappointed if he just died and the family never knew who did it...
  • I wanted some Old Testament justice too.

Have you read her first book, "Lucky"? That will make you cry. I couldn't finish it.

</div><div>This.  I kept waiting for the part where her dad gets to kill him - or maybe her sister ;)</div>
  • I was disappointed in the ending.  I have read the book twice.  The second time I obviously knew what was going to happen in the end and that she was raped and murdered I still couldn't help hoping that the story had changed.  I know I know...weird!

  • I was disappointed about Harvey never being brought to justice.  I was also kind of disappointed that during that whole bizarro scene where she inhabits her friend's body she uses it to have sex with a guy instead of at least calling her dad and being like, MY BODY IS IN THE SINKHOLE.

  • ZRex, EXACTLY. I didn't get that part at all. Losing your virginity through possession is more important than actually giving your family a bit of closure that only you can give them? Odd.

I did love the way Harvey died, though. The perfect murder weapon and all that.
  • I agree about the movie. There was no dimension to it. Only good thing about it was the music

You should finish it, it's really good.  She actually stopped writing The Lovely Bones to write that memoir (Lucky) because she was afraid of putting too much of her own story into TLB and she wanted TLB to be purely fictional.
