Any nurses here? (NER)

This isn't E related, but this is one of the most active boards so I thought I'd post here...

One of my BM will be graduating as a RN soon after my wedding so I wanted to get her something that would be useful as part of her gift. I know nothing about the field though so was wondering if anyone could help me with a gift idea. I know they wear scrubs, but wanted to get her something that was maybe a little more useful/different? I don't know haha any help would be appreciated! TIA!

  • Not a nurse but starting school soon. I would love a nice pedicure. A nurse is standing, bending all day so I know her feet must be sore.

  • A pedicure and a good stethoscope!

  • Dansko clogs.
  • I second Dansko, they are amazing!

  • What is your budget? A good stethoscope is expensive, and I would think she would have one already. I think a pedicure or a massage is a good idea. Or maybe a reusable coffee mug with some different coffees (especially if she will be working nights). I use bandage scissors/trauma shears alot, but those are pretty inexpensive.
  • Also not a nurse but I have two friends that work in the medical field (not sure on their "titles", one works in a nursing home and one works at the VA. One is currently in school and the other didn't go to school for anything medical related). I think they'd appreciate a massage or something! Also a bottle of wine ;-) Then again, I'd like either of those and I'm not in that field! Hehe.

  • I'm thinking about $100. Right now I'm just kind of coming up with a list of things for each girl, and then I'm going to go through and figure out what would be best to buy/spend.

I think I'm going to go with the pedicure. She's also a totally girly girl and loves being pampered so I know she would enjoy that either way. What would be a "good" stethoscope?

Ah now I have one more question! Another one of my BM is going to Europe a week after my wedding to do her semester abroad. I was going to give her a passport wallet/holder deal and put some Euros in it. Is that tacky you think to be giving her Euros? I did my semester abroad a few years ago and loved being able to have Euros getting there and not have to change my money over right away. I'm giving her other stuff besides that as well.
  • I'm a physician, but I favor Littman for stethoscopes.  I use the Cardiology III, but a bunch of my colleagues use the Master Classic II, which is under $100.

I just graduated nursing school in May..Good stethescope and any other tools she needed to get through school I'm quite sure she has it. IF I were asked what do you want as a graduation gift it would be cash or a gift card/certificate to a uniform store. The uniforms we use in school (depending on colors) don't carry over into the real world. I have $200 worth of uniforms hanging in my closet that I can't use for my new job :/
Plus the gift card would help to cover everything PP's has stated if he needs it ...HTH

I like the passport & euros idea :)

This is the one I use right now. I broke my other one. I just bought it for $75 at the vendor that was at the lunch room today.

I like the coffee/mug idea probably because I work night shift and pedicures are nice too. I love getting one after a long week of doubles. Coffee and Pedicures = my two splurges.

  • Not a nurse, but I'm a unit clerk that works with a lot of nurses, and Danskos are so universally loved they're practically part of the uniform. I would think a gc for a good shoe store would be great.

I was just going to recommend a Littman. It's the only stethoscope I will use.

Mine is a Littman Master Classic II black edition and I love it. I would also recommend getting her name on it

Mica- if you don't mind me asking, what kind of physician are you?

  • As a nurse I echo the stethascope suggestion.  However, might I suggest getting it engraved with her name/initials? Scopes have a tendency to walk off at work or go missing, so having one personalized would help her be able to recognize hers if lost or stolen.

  • Thank you so much everyone! Ok so pedicure and stethoscope it is. I'm so excited I love getting presents I know people will enjoy haha.

This is going to be a dumb question... But where would you get a stethoscope engraved? Is there a certain part of it to do it on?

They can either engrave it on the metal part that connects the ear pieces to the tube, or some people have a very small plaque placed where the metal and the plastic come together.  Most sthethoscope companies offer engraving and would be able to advise you.
