Wedding Etiquette Forum

Hey guys, Obama says it's ok...

To break etiquette and have a wedding fundraiser.  You know, as long as it's for his campaign.

  • Yes, I think this was posted last week

  • I never saw it posted if it was.  I also wasn't around last week, so my bad if it's a duplicate.

I think I would rather donate to a campaign than a honeymoon registry though.

  • See, and I wouldn't rather donate to a campaign than a HM registry.  BUT, I'm also one of those who doesn't always find HM registries to be the crime of the century like it is around here.  And also with my job I think all political campaigns reach obnoxious levels of ridiculousness.  And it's also frowned upon if I donate, lol.

  • I would get it if the couple was really politically involved, but I still side-eye a bit.   But it disgusts me how much money is dumped into campaigning so there's that.  There needs to be restrictions (financial and time).  Particularly because the incumbant should be doing their job rather than spending time and money on campaigning for half of their term.

<div>Well see, that would require me to go to other boards, or care about the registering and gifts board to see that.</div>

I do think it could be a little abrasive, but so could any 'donations in lieu of gifts' request, and non-profits take that money, they don't say "Well, actually its against etiquette to ask for donations so we would rather not offend your guests and refuse this money."

I worked for a non-profit (still do, but this was a different one) and when a couple called the development office to say "Oh we're going to ask our guests to donate to you in lieu of a wedding gift!" it definitely seemed AW-ish.  And we got maybe 1 or 2 checks in their honor.
  • Hahaha.  I like the title differences between E and R&G.

    E - WORST IDEA EVER
R&G - Great idea or Tacky?

  • Sooner or later, some politician will be telling all the little grandmas out there, "Hey, your grandkid doesn't need that 10-spot for his/her birthday! Send it to ME instead!"

    That'll be great, too.

    Yegads.

  • Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl.

Obama can only be president for four more years. That gravy bowl will last you at least 10 ; )

I don't know, I don't like donation only registries - but if on your wedding website under registry info you have a link to your registry and a link to that, I don't think it's a big deal. You're not really saying "Hey, everyone donate to this cause because I know you're going to get me a gift anyways!" it's more like "Hey, if you want to give us a gift here is our registry - and also here is a cause that is dear to our hearts if you want to donate!"

    I dislike honeymoon registries.
  • haha ok I might have been a little over the top with my thread title...but ya...pretty ridiculous!

I think it's pretty gauche, but like I said in the other thread, ya can't blame 'em for trying!

[QUOTE]Eh, if I knew a couple who was really into politics and saw this, I wouldn't think twice about it.  I wouldn't necessarily donate to it, but I wouldn't side eye it like a HM registry.  I'm unabashedly Team Obama though.

  • I wouldn't be thrilled about it since 9 times out of 10 my friends will not support a candidate that I do. So I would just give them a gift card or something instead. I want to give a gift to my friends. Not to politicians.

  • I think it's a bad idea. It really opens the door to be offensive to many of your guests (regardless of which way you swing politically).
  • Holy eff, ok, I missed that it was posted before, got it.

  • Uh, Beach?  It was posted before.  In case you didn't realize.
