When did you book your honeymoon?

So I want to book our flights for the honeymoon now.  They've already gone up since I started looking a few months ago.  We're leaving May 22nd so we're looking at about 5 months out (right?) Noodle is convinced that prices will go up and up and up, and then drop 2 months before the honeymoon and we should book then because it will be cheaper.  Bear in mind he doesn't want to fly too early or too late, and he doesn't want more than one layover (and not one too long or too short).  I'm getting kind if pissed off, because he refuses to let me book the plane tickets now and insists they'll drop because of his experience booking travel for business (he flies MAYBE 2 or 3 times a year, usually to places like Cheyenne, Wyoming or Las Vegas).  But this being international travel (Costa Rica), I'm very hesitant to wait.

Anyways, when did you guys book your honeymoon?  Did anybody wait until the last minute and get good deals on international travel?

Re: When did you book your honeymoon?

  • The first time, we booked around a month in advance (but that is because we weren't sure if we'd be going on one, since we didn't know if I'd have a job or not).  We ended up cancelling when H was sick, and we re-booked about 3 weeks before we went on the honeymoon in June.
  • We're actually leaving for our honeymoon on May 22nd, too, and we just booked it today.

  • I just booked ours today (to St. Lucia - woo!), less than 2 months out.  Definitely didn't get as good of a deal as I would have if I booked earlier...prices went up from the last time I talked to our travel agent.  Aren't there websites out there that predict the best time to buy plane tickets? Maybe try checking one of those and see what they say.
  • Oh, and waiting later caused us to miss the flights with fewer stops, those were all booked up today.  :( I really wish I had booked sooner!
  • If we even do a HM right now, we will book it last minute, and just not be very picky about where we go or the dates.

We're not sure if FI will be able to get off work, but if he does, we'll have the whole week and will just be flexible to get the best deals.

If you're flexible in your dates, maybe you could do that? Travelocity is always running last minute deals with flexible dates, so you could get really lucky by waiting.

  • We're not flexible on our dates (his work schedule).  And we're set on where we want to go.  And for how long. Which is why I don't understand why he won't let me book.

  • We booked ours 4 weeks before. We paid a bit more in airfare, but got a good deal for the hotel we stayed at in the Bahamas.

  • we also are going to costa rica. we booked our trip in october but i still haven't booked the flights. i really need to do that.
  • We bought our tickets in the spring for the HM that was in December. They were on sale.

  • I think it just depends on the demand for tickets, if there are a lot of seats left close to the date they will cost less but if there are only a few then they will be more expensive. If there is a specific time that you want to fly then I would suggest booking now because it will probably be a prime fly time and book up sooner than others.
  • This might be a stupid suggestion, but doesn't orbitz have price assurance if you book your travel accommodations though them? We booked a cruise on orbitz, then the price dropped. The cruise line gave us onboard credits, but I can't remember if that was the doing of Orbitz or Carnival.

Look into that option if it could guarantee you get the lowest price.

We are getting ,married in OCT and just decided concretely where we want to go on our HM, so have made no travel accommodations yet. I would book soon if Noodle is picky about his flight itinerary.

  • my FI is a flight attendant and we do a lot of traveling. The prices trend that we have noticed is that you can get the best deals around the 5 month out mark and the 2 month out mark. For flying to frontier it's my experience that frontier airlines has the best deals and there is only one stop in denver for all of their flights to costa rica. Hope that helps.

  • I would personally book now, although that said, I think I booked 3 months out for our international flight/accom for our honeymoon to Vanuatu.
