White Elephant Gift

I'm going to a coworker's holiday party this evening and there's a White Elephant gift exchange. Anyone have a good idea for a $10 gift? The people are mid 20's to mid 30's, both men and women.

You could find a recipe for a holiday cocktail and put together the ingredients for it and include the recipe.

Also, I think these homemade cookie "mixes" from Bakerella are a cute idea and would be pretty easy. You could substitute another color for the pink m&ms and make it look festive.

  • I always thought it was supposed to be crap gifts, like stuff you wouldn't want (based on the one and only exchange I've witnessed, and my mom's interpretation). But then I've heard people say it's supposed to be something good, hence lpstl's suggestion of booze.

  • We had dirty sanata a few weeks ago. We got an extra copy of Star Trek (which BTW was fanffuckingtastic to my surprise) in mail, so we wrapped that up and gave it away. The person that got it,did not trade off.

  • Also, if the people in your group like to cook, you could get a small terracotta pot and pick up some small herb plants and put together a little herb garden. That way they can have fresh herbs during the winter. You can probably find the plants either at a grocery store or at Home Depot.

  • It can be crap gifts. That makes it more interesting.

  • The Snuggie.
  • HAHAHA yes! The Snuggie, do it!

  • Ha, other people have mentioned giving snuggies. Wasn't sure I wanted to go that route.

  • White Elephant gifts are crap or gag gifts.  Maybe something around the house you want to re-gift, or something random and funny.

  • yep, they are crap gifts.  I've actually just located something from MIL I wanted to regift (she is not with it and always gives me crazy crap) for the white elephant exhange I'm going to tonight.  In college, the best gifts were found in the dumpster.

The best coincidence ever, I was at a white elephant gift exchange where someone gave a bike U-lock they had found in the street.  Another guy at the party had wiped out at that interseciton and maimed his bike a week or two before.  He took out his bike lock key, and - yup! - it fit the lock.

I've also given an action figure jesus at a bible study, and some real diamond (tiny) jewelry that had everyone gasping.  It made more sense when I told them the fact that it was stuff from an ex boyfriend that I'd been trying to get rid of anyway :)
  • Yeah, you could do a crap gift if you want to.

A friend of mine put an expired can of soup in a box she had from a well known local handmade candle company. It was stolen 3 times because everyone thought it was a candle. Poor guy that got it wasn't so pleased when he opened it up, but the rest of us thought it was damn funny :).

  • Ha, good stories. The bike lock must have been hilarious. I just remembered we got two Apples to Apples games for wedding gifts. Done and done. Not a crap gift, but definitely free.

To my work one I'm bringing Bop It. It's a game - look it up on Target. It's so freaking fun! :D

  • I've done white elephants with both crap gifts and good gifts, and sometimes a mixture. I always like receiving a gift card (itunes, gas, restaurant, target, etc.), but I know that's not the exciting answer. I also like the booze suggestion. Or maybe a movie? You can find some awesome movies at Walmart and Target for $10. Even better, 2 crappy $5 bin movies. I discovered the move Earth Girls are Easy in that bin. Awesome/terrible movie.
    Leo says hi. He's...special.

  • Bop It is very fun.  My daughters had one, and I would regularly hijack it.
