FMIL wants me to register (but we are having a private wedding - just the two of us)

My FMIL wants me to register for gifts because she insists that people will want to purchase gifts for us but I think it's improper because we are getting married alone out of the country and are not planning to have a reception. We are combining households and to be perfectly honest I don't know what we could register for anyway because we have more than enough. I don't think that registering is the right thing to do but she mentions it all the time. Any thoughts???

You are right, don't register.  If she wants to buy you a gift, she can.

That would be pointless to register with such a private, intimate wedding. That in no way should stop her from buying you guys a gift if she wants. Both our parents just gave us money anyway.

You could register anyway and just not publicize the information... some stores will give you discounts and bonuses just for having a registry with them.

Some people might want to give you a gift anyway to wish you well, but... really, don't feel pressured to register.

I wouldn't register in your case. I think it would be something of a waste of time since you don't plan to have a reception.
