Ridiculous bird question

I have a really strange problem. My family room is log- think log cabin.
There are beams that extend about 2 feet past the house on the roof.
A few of the beams have rotted on the end. We will be cutting those rotten ends off, and repairing the roof.
Here is my problem. In the rotted part, some birds have made little nests. I don't think there are any babies yet. So, I want to get the birds out safely. Any ideas as to how to get them to leave?

My grandfather is helping us do this repair, and he doesn't share my bird love. So, I need a solution by this weekend.

[QUOTE]Oo do you know what the bird vacuumer was called? One of the logs is right above our wood stove.

    I REALLY don't know.

I could see if my Dad remembers, but it was when we first moved up here.  We haven't had the same problem since.  I have a feeling it was under either chimney cleaning or animal services in the phone book.  I wonder if a vet or local SPCA could even give you someone's contact info.

I do remember the birds that were sucked into the canister were babies.  I'm sure it's not a fun trip for them, but they do survive and are pretty goofy, ash covered little things.
  • I agree that if there are no eggs, just remove the nests and the birds will leave. Do it TODAY though, they lay eggs VERY quickly.. It won't hurt them at all - sparrows have multiple clutches of babies throughout a single summer, so it's not as if you'll be ruining their chance to procreate this season. :)

To me, it sounds like you're risking breaking delicate legs and wings if you suck them into a canister, and it accomplishes the same thing as if you just take the nest away - making the birds relocate..

[QUOTE]I know I am coming at this as a biologist here but if they are sparrows their populations are huge so it no big deal at all to move their nests. Don't even feel a little bad about it.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it if they're sparrows. They're cute & all, but they can survive anywhere. They used to live on my fire escape in NYC!
  • If there are no eggs in the nests, then just remove them.  Place them nearby, either in a better location for nests, or where the birds can still get to them to move the nesting material somewhere else.

Then you need to keep them from re-nesting in the rafters.  Most people use those fake owls under overhangs or where they don't want bird nests.  You can get them at most garden departments of Lowe's or Home Depot, hardware stores, tractor supply/feed stores, or maybe even Wal-mart.

Awww, and I was hoping that this would be about birds flying into your head repeatedly.  I keep hoping for someone else to have that problem.
