I hate you, European sizing.

Yeeeeaaaahhh... I went shopping today to find my first pair of jeans in Europe cause I'm kind of in desperate need.  First, I started off about my size in the US, a 6.  Hell.No.  So, I tried the 8, and then the 10, and finally the 12.  WTF.  Basically, the 10 was just too small in the legs (like, couldn't pull them all the way up) and the 12 fit perfectly in the legs, and was 1 inch too big in the waist!!! Angry

Made me want to go eat a big bucket of chocolate.  But since I don't have any, I'm eating my can of pringles instead.

Helpful, I know.

  • uhm yeah, I feel your pain!  In France if you are above a 36 hip, forget it.  You are SOL.  I wear a 10 or a medium shirt in the US.  Here I am an XL.  Baiscally I'm too big for France.

    How is Italy for pants?

I never tried Italy because the one time I tried to buy a coat, I was an XL.  Turned me off shopping right there.  I've bought a couple of shirts and a dress, but that's all. The dress I was a medium in (stretchy fit) and all the shirts are M too.
  • Well, that would be depressing. So if you're bigger than that, you have to like...order your clothes online?

  • DH had this problem in Paris last year.  He is a XXL in US sizes (although I think XL looks good, but he likes the extra room).  We went to every store on the Champs Elysees and could not find one shirt that would even come close to fitting him.  Especially on the length, some shirts would fit his shoulders, but he gut would pop up out because it was not long enough.

He was pretty depressed over it.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Fische, I don't think women ARE bigger than that.  I have noticed that I am the largest woman in Antibes under the age of 65.  So I guess I could find stuf that fits, but I want to buy the cute clothes!

And for everyone who hates the skinny jeans or leggings as pants?  You would hate it here.  That is pretty much all I see.

  • Yeah, I was trying to buy a pair.  Apparently, I'm too fat for them.  Since we're going to be living in Europe for a while longer, I was going to try to assimilate my style a bit more.  GRR.

H, on the other hand, is the perfect size for all men's clothes.  fvcker.
  • Geeze, I hate to think what a whale europeans would think I am, if a wee thing like you cant fit into their stupid pants.
  • Nebb, I think if one is closer to an apple shape you might have better luck.  As a pear shape, with thighs and hips, I'm screwed.

Does anyone remember how thin your thighs had to be for Jordache jeans in the 80's?  That is still the sizing over here.

  • Amoro, see if you can try the UK.  H's chef and stewardess always have to go home to buy pants.

  • Schit.  I didn't want to have to go outside the country for freaking pants.

Yeah, I'm definitely pear shaped and it's causing me huge issues.  Especially because I have longer than average legs so their always too short too.  BOOOO!
  • Man, I'd be screwed over there as a US size 10. And I feel your pain on the leg length Amoro. My legs may not look long, but I have to even be careful about drying my Longs because if I do, heels are no longer an option.

Is that UK sizing, Amoro? Sounds a lot like it. I wear 6-8's here, and 0-2 fit me in the states... it was ridiculous (but in the opposite way, for me! Perhaps that's why we have that sizing- to flatter ourselves when we travel elsewhere! haha).

You think that's small, you should head to Asia. When I was in hong kong, the size Mediums were a perfect fit for me. At home, I'm usually XS - S. Those girls are so tiny!

  • No wonder the jeans in Spain fit me...I am an apple shape...skinny legs and thicker waist.

I also accidentally bought a H&M maternity shirt.  I didn't realize that H&M Mama actually *meant* H&M Mama.  And I thought the huge elastic waist bands on the jeans were some weird European trend.
