Maybe I'm a prude, but...

I don't think the words "sexy" and "teen" should go in the same sentence.

For example: http://www.zoogstercostumes.com/landing/sexyteen.php

It was advertised on the radio this morning that this Halloween place somewhere around here has sexy teen costumes. I felt the same way last spring when they were advertising sexy teen prom dresses. It just seems wrong. I went as a COW in high school.

My mom would have KILLED me if I would have worn any of those costumes as a teenager.

Would you let your kid wear these?

  • a) my mother would NOT have let me out in the house in those
    b) it really wouldn't have mattered anyway because I was, like, 5' and 85 lbs in high school...I didn't have enough of anything to fill out any of those costumes.

  • Wow.  I wouldn't even wear those in my early 20's, much less my teen years.

I think it's ridiculous that they market them directly to the teenagers - no need to tell them it's OK to be sl*tty.
  • Would I let my kids wear this? No. Hell no. No way in Hell, no. No.
  • My parents would have locked me in my room until I was 50 if I tried to wear something like that.

  • No freaking way.  I wore a "sexy" Snow White costume when I was 27, but ya know, it was just really short.  Nothing else.  Those are a little over the top.
  • Mmmm exploitation of our youth mmmm

  • Oh hell fucking no would I let my daughter wear one of these! Why is it that Halloween costume manufacturers push the slutty costumes for women?
  • From the little pics I saw 2 I MIGHT let my daughter wear the cutsey sailor looked like it covered alot and the convict and correcion officer IF she was the convict. I would never ever think to wear that my dad would have killed me! I barely was able to get out of the house in a wife beater button up shirt opened to go as a grease monkey.

Mean Girls and yeah, it's ridiculous.  My one co-worker was looking for a costume one year and came back all disappointed.  She was like, "I don't want to be a SLUTTY bumblebee!"

I would NOT let my future daughter out of the house in something like that.  I wore a sexy tinkerbell costume when I was 23 or so and the pictures look ridiculous.

If you're from Africa, why are you white?

Back to the issue at hand...in high school, my sexiest costume was dressing up as a cheerleader in my friend's cheerleading outfit. Sure, by the time I was 17 I wanted to look a little less scary/silly and a little more cute, but I definitely wasn't wearing glorified lingerie and calling it a costume.
  • Oh my GOD, Emily, you can't just ask people why they're WHITE.

  • Um no.

I was never allowed to buy costumed period because they are too expensive.  We were allowed to buy parts of costumes, like wings, or a ears or something like that though.
  • I'm having Superwoman Kasi flashbacks right now...

  • I never would've even asked to wear these- where's the fun in that? I scrapped my costumes together from random stuff that I either bought or stole from my parents closet (i.e.- hippie, gum on the bottom of a shoe, 80's glam).

Even in college, I never considered wearing a slutty costume. That's not something I needed to broadcast.
  • That's also true about not buying one.  The only reason I bought the Snow White one, was because we decided to go only two days before the party.
  • WTF is with the sexy ghostbuster one? Is she supposed to fight ghosts with her bust? Because that might actually work.
  • NO WAY would my kid get out of the house in any of those. I was shocked at some of the costumes they had for little kids at the Halloween store when we went to get costumes last week. This is appropriate for a 10 year old, really?

I might, MIGHT, let my kid wear this, She is 13, but the boots are a huge NO. I don't even wear boots like that. She freaked out yesterday because I wouldn't let her have a small heel on her winter boots, so I can imagine that these comstumes only get approved because the teen girl is screaming about her parents hating her and crying untill they giver her what she wants. She didn't get hte boots BTW.
  • Maybe she's supposed to shoot stuff out of her tatas?

And Jill, that costume is horrid.

  • True story - I got sent home in 8th grade for wearing my hippie costume.  I wore a bare midriff - my mom and I both thought it was cute and not sexy.

I agree that we need to tone down the teen sexy crap.

  • My sisters neighbor has a now 15 year old girl.  When the kid was 12, her mother was really frustrated trying to find her daughter a costume that, in her words, "didn't make her kid look like a tramp".

And it's only gotten worse since then.

  • My kids are going to hate me. We never bought Halloween costumes when we were little-my mom always made them, and we always went together as something. One year we were ostrich racers, another year we were bugs and my sister (who was 15 and  refused to wear a costume) was a can of Raid.
  • I'm definitely tired of seeing everyone running around in their underwear on Halloween.
    image
  • We never bought costumes either, and I'll probably buy costumes when my kid's a newborn, but after that, it'll be homemade all the way.
  • You know, when I think of "prude" I instantly think of "Fishy."

  • alainn15  I LOVE your costume!!! We were thinking of a costume like that.

  • I don't have kids, but I would NOT let my kid wear something like any of those.  People say they buy their kids clothes that many find "inappropriate" because that's all there is.  If people wouldn't buy them, they wouldn't make them.  Ugh.  I do not know what possesses some people.
