Weird toe cramp

The toe next to my big toe is doing weird things.

I got a massive pain the arch of my foot..a cramp. Then my toe got stiff and moved to the right, almost under my big toe. I can shake it out, but it keeps coming back. When I bend my toes it comes back imminently.

I have had it happen before but only once or twice and not this long. Do I need to eat bananas?

Re: Weird toe cramp

  • Dh and I have that happen a lot. I just place my hand behind my foot so my index finger is behind my toes and curl the toes over my hand. I always assumed it was coming out of joint and normally that made it go away.
  • That happens to me sometimes....yes most likely lack of potassium, bananas would help this.  Believe it or not baked potatoes with the skin on have more potassium then a banana.
  • This is definitely TMI, but I always get these during sex when we switch positions.  Maybe its a way you move your leg.

  • This happens to me when I'm dehydrated. It's also not just a lack in potassium but it's also from a lack of iron. It happens to people who are anemic pretty often.
Go drink some water and see if that helps!

  • haha Shelly I was thinking the same thing!  : )

Sometimes I also wake up in the middle of the night because for some reason I point my toes and it makes them cramp up.
  • and let me tell you, it really sets the mood, right in the middle "ahhhh toe cramp!"

  • I had no idea that an iron deficiency could cause cramping like that!

  • "Nocturnal leg cramps are sudden, involuntary contractions of the calf muscles that occur during the night or while at rest"  This could cause the toe to cramp too....

This happens to me often, especially now that I am wearing heels more. I usually just hold it and put some pressure on it to make it go away.

<div>I didn't know either until my Doctor told me last year. I brought it up because I was getting these spasms so bad in the middle of the night that the muscle would be sore for days after. It felt like I done an insanely difficult work out when it was actually just sore from twisting itself. It also looked like I had an alien trying to pop out of the side of my foot or my calf. Those are the 2 places I get them.</div><div> My friend who's anemic gets them pretty much everyday even with her iron supplements. Man, they suck.</div>

Now that I think about it, I think this has happened to me too!

  • I used to get these so bad.  All of my toes would extend, and they wouldn't relax.   Sometimes my whole foot would do it.

This is seriously weird, but I have this little plastic thing that you are supposed to use to separate your toes when you paint them that stretches them out.  I've started putting my toes in it for 20-30 minutes every few days to stretch them out, and they've stopped.
  • mynameisnot- I think I'll try it....right now.

  • Stretching is great, but a lot of cramps come from a mineral deficiency.  Potassium is common, but magnesium or calcium deficiencies can cause muscle cramping too.  Anemia from iron deficiency causes more leg cramps than foot cramps.

Pregnancy makes them worse.  I used to get them in my toes, but rarely in my larger muscles.

I almost fell over while conducting a concert at the state capitol because I got a huge charlie horse in my thigh and could barely stand upright.  It was sore for days after.

These days I get them in my calves in the morning.  I have to be careful when I'm stretching, otherwise I will be in pain and sore for the rest of the day.

  • I find it helps to get up and walk around. It really hurts at first, but then stretches my foot out and the cramps go away.
