Postage Issue

There's probably nothing I can do in this situation, but I feel really bad!

My shower invitations got mailed out today, and some of them may accidentally be delivered postage due!!

My MOH was mailing most of my shower invitations today.  I was mailing the remainder (about 30-35) that were to be delivered in my hometown because I already had them at my house (because FI's sisters--BMs--addressed some of them for MOH) and I thought it would be easier for the post office since they just stayed there (I later found out I was wrong and they have to send them out anyway so it doesn't matter).

Anyway, I personally took the shower invitations to get weighed the same day I took the wedding invitations (solely because I was already making a trip to the post office, and as a favor to MOH).  The lady weighed them and gave told me the proper postage, which I relayed to MOH so she could buy the stamps.  When I took my smaller batch to the post office after work today, the lady (same one who weighed before) put the first one on the scale and said it didn't have enough postage!!  She then weighed all the rest individually and they were all fine except for 2.  So, I just paid the extra 20 cents for those 2 and got them sent out.  I have NO idea why the 2 were over.  All the invitations should have been the exact same, and she said it was JUST barely over the 1 ounce.

So, I called MOH to warn her of this, and she had already mailed her batch.  She took them to the post office, where they did NOT check the weight, just asked if there were already stamps on them, then took them.  I asked the lady at my post office what would happen with those ones, and she said if any were over the weight, they would either get sent back to MOH (whose return address is on the envelopes), would get delivered postage due, or they might not get weighed since it is such a small difference, in which case they would get delivered as normal.

I would just feel really really terrible if someone received an invitation to my shower with postage due!!!!

Re: Postage Issue

  • If there is not enough postage they should just send it back. They won't go to the door to try to collect postage that I know of.

Actually, they might try to get the remaining postage from the person it was sent to. What I have seen done is the mailman will deliver a postcard that will tell the person they have a piece of mail at the post office, and to receive it they will need to come in and pay the balance.

OP, since they have already been sent, there is nothing you can do but hope they get delivered with no issues.

<div>See, I would have never thought they did this but they do.  I mailed something out to a patient once and accidentally was 2 cents under the correct postage.  This patient called to nicely let me know that she had received my mailer but that she had to pay 2 cents to the postman to get it.  Yikes!  Never in a million years would I have thought they'd collect money from whomever they were delivering to, but apparently it does happen.</div>

  • Yup, it does happen.  My cousin sent me some family photos for a project I was doing once and I had to pay for both batches.  Eleven cents for one and closer to 50 cents for the other.  Hopefully it's a non issue for you though!
  • It absolutely happens. I have received one. If you aren't home, the postal carrier puts the slip in your mailbox stating whatever it is is at the post office and you must pay to receive it. In my case, it was junk mail and was .35 under. I was not happy to drive to the post office to find this out. Now in your case, I highly doubt this would occur since they were dropped off in a large group and they asked if postage was already on it. I bet they took the stack and put them in the outgoing mail immediately. Don't worry about it. If your guests have to pay a few cents postage, it will come back on the moh and have her look bad. Not you. Let us know how it ends up.

  • How odd. I've only sent one thing out that was insignificant postage...they sent it back to me.
Maybe because it was from my work to a client (another firm)?

    The more you know. :)

  • Thanks everyone, I will let you know if I find anything out.  I did let my mom & FMIL know about the postage, just in case one of the guests would contact them wondering about it, IF any do end up getting delivered with postage due.  Also, I really hope it is the case that they just put my cousin's batch right in the outgoing mail...oh well, nothing I can do know but try to forget about it and wait and see!!

I can't believe the patient called you about that. IT'S TWO CENTS.
