XP: Wii Fit/ EA sports Active?

Man I'm kind of being a post whore today.  I'm also posting this on GIS btw.

Anyway I have a question. We just got a Wii for christmas (soooo excited it's not even funny and have already downloaded 2 NES games, 1 sega, and 1 super NES, plus the games we bought). I'm trying to decide if it would be worth it to buy either Wii Fit (we don't have a balance board yet and would have to get one) or EA sports Active.  I don't know if any extra equipment is necessary for EA Active. Which one is better/more fun? Are either helpful?

I'm going to join the Y in a few weeks to get most of my cardio and weightlifting in (hopefully), but I would really like something else active to do at home. I have a yoga mat and used to really enjoy yoga when I was still bendy, and still enjoy pilates, but am wondering if this would really be better than just working out with videos?

  • I heard the wii fit is like a personal trainer.  It gives your weight, bmi, body fat, and it makes you balance yourself properly so it is even better than being in yoga where you may not be doing the posture right.  It finds your center of balance and makes you keep it there.  I heard people get sore using it.  I hope it is true.

    I want one soooooo bad.

I can't speak for the EA Active, but we just got the Wii Fit Plus and LOVE it. I certainly wouldn't use it for everything, and if you're already a yoga pro it's not going to be a huge challenge, but I've personally enjoyed it. It focuses a lot on balance, which I find helps me concentrate on proper form. Also, the aerobic games are great because not only is it a bit of a work out, you could play it with your friends (the hula hooping is hilarious).

Also, I think it's great merely for the weight/bmi measurement and chart. It helps keep you accountable and it's nice to see the graph go down. It's like a scale that keeps track.

Also, you can set up your own routines by clicking on different moves (tree pose, tricep extensions, jack knives) and a trainer will lead you through them. Or, you can tell the program that you have 5/10/15/20 minutes, create something for me. It also has presets for "tummy" or for "overindulging".

Sure, you still have to go to the gym. But it has some great stuff for strength training, balance, and accountability. Plus, it's fun! I love the rhythm boxing, and some of this stuff would be hilarious to do with friends.
  • My FI actually bought both the Wii Fit and the EA active.  I personally liked the Wii Fit better because it was more fun and kept me entertained.  I am not one that likes working out so I needed something fun to keep me going.  My personal favorites were the step aerobics and the hula hooping!  I also liked how it had the scale and BMI so you could easily track your progress.

The EA Active was more intense than the Wii Fit.  If you are looking to burn more calories, I would go with the EA Active.  FI definitely sweated up a storm using that thing.  He actually broke his foot using it because he was running in place without shoes on.  It comes with everything you need so you don't need to buy any extras (although FI did buy a more resistant band.)

    HTH!
  • I have the Wii Fit and love it.  I feel that it's more of a game than a workout though.  I haven't broken a sweat on a single thing other than running.  I like how it fixes your posture and tracks your moves though.

I really want to try the EA Sports Active though.

Alos, there's a pretty big price difference.  The Wii Fit is $99.99 and the EA Sports Active is $69.99.
